Entry Year Changes?

Have there been changes in the entry year for most selective enrollment schools this year? I haven’t seen anything on the main page, but I came across this list, and the only non-ELL schools where Kindergarten is listed are Bronzeville, McPherson, Morton, and Sor Juana. Is this an error or an under-the-radar change? I don’t think it’s an outdated list, since last year was the first year that it was possible to apply for Morton’s RGC program, and most of the schools listed for grades 1-4 (sidebar: why are they ending at 4?) definitely welcomed new Kindergarteners for the 2021-22 school year. Any thoughts or clarity would be welcome!

Also, looking at the “Admissions” section of school profiles, I’m noticing that, for example, Morton and McPherson have criteria for Selective Enrollment admissions, whereas schools like Bell, Skinner North, and Edison don’t. What’s the deal? Are they going to be seriously limiting SEES admissions this year? Are they phasing some programs out? Because that’s what it feels like…

Also ALSO: If this change is happening, are schools aware of it? Bell’s open house sign up form (which lists dates from Sep 2021-May 2022) lists Kindergarten as their RGC  entry year. Sorry for all the posts, I just came into this process expecting one thing, and now I’m worried that reality is not going to meet that expectation.

As to the school profiles, I think CPS is updating its websites at the worst possible time. They no longer list the schools’ ratings on the school profiles anymore and only some school have admissions information. I even saw a note yesterday in yellow at the bottom of the school profiles that said the website was in view only mode and no updates would be saved. The message is gone today. Even the go.cps.edu website has been updated. There is no longer a menu tab on the right side of the page. I hope the websites will be fully updated soon. I don’t know about the pdf you shared, though.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that the updates on school profiles and Go CPS have been weirdly timed and apparently not always proofread at times, but the thing I’m finding especially…concerning?…telling? is that Bronzeville, McPherson, Morton, and Sor Juana (which were the only four schools listed as “K” on the pdf) I found ALL have Selective Enrollment information under the Admissions tab on their school profile pages, but none of the others I’ve checked (including Bell, Edison, both Skinners, and Decatur) do. I think Bell and Skinner West might have other information under that tab, like Open Enrollment or Magnet, but nothing specific to Selective Enrollment.

I guess I get if they want to bump the entry year back to 1st grade for most schools, I just don’t necessarily like it…plus I’m not entirely sure that that’s what the plan is. I also would feel a lot better if they were explicit about announcing changes instead of posting information that hints that there are going to be changes. Of course, it’s possible that I’m reading too much into things and they’re not actually making any significant changes. That said, I really find it fishy that the only four school profiles updated with selective enrollment information are also the four schools identified as offering Kindergarten on the pdf.

Also, fwiw, I checked the file details on the pdf I linked to, and it’s definitely current/recent. It was created on 9/30/2021, and last updated on 10/8. Here’s the Go CPS page where I found it: https://go.cps.edu/elementary-school/resources (it’ll load if you click on “Selective Enrollment Elementary Schools List”)

The document is not very helpful in explaining what the grades column means. You would think it would be the grades they teach. However, the schools you mentioned say K-K and Pulaski (not an ELL school) also states K-4. I wonder why CPS would put out this document on the main website without any explanation of what it means. Perhaps we should call OAE to ask or email the author of the document. The name of the author can be found in the document details.

I actually just emailed the main Go CPS email ([email protected]), though I don’t expect to hear anything before Tuesday at the earliest. I considered emailing the document author, but I didn’t want to come across as presumptuous or demanding. I agree that the explanation of the “Grades” column isn’t at all clear, which doesn’t help when trying to interpret the list.

Pulaski is one of the three ELL RGCs, though (it also has a magnet cluster program); the other two are Greeley and Orozco. Also I remembered that you previously mentioned that CPS has removed ratings from school profiles, but that’s not an oversight, that’s intentional: due to Covid/remote learning, there will be no ratings from the 2020 school year.

Okay, that makes sense. It’s just going to be more difficult to compare schools without the previous year’s rating readily available. I know you can find it in the download section, though.

Keep us posted if you get a response!

Just wanted to update now that the application has opened and clarify that this was apparently a false alarm…there do not seem to have been any changes to RGC or Classical entry years. Good luck to everyone applying!

Yes, I already applied. My guess is that their website is getting too much traffic and is crashing…I can’t get GoCPS to load for me at all currently. I happened to notice that they opened the application about 7 minutes earlier than they’d said they were going to, so I probably just lucked out by accessing the system earlier than most people.

One thing I did notice was that Selective Enrollment Exams all take place during the school day (Tue, Thu, Fri only) from November 2-December 17, which I found a bit annoying. There was better (imo) availability during winter break.

Hi– I am not able to login, my account is not found. Like you said, been using it for years. Have more parents created a whole new account today? Just asking before creating a new one. Thank you 😉

I had to create an entirely new account. I think they switched to a new interface or something…the system, dashboard, etc. all look completely different.

For anyone having issues, I also had to create a whole new account even though I’ve been using that for 3 years now.

Was anyone able to schedule for the test yet?  I don’t see the option to select date for testing.  Thanks.

Yes, we scheduled it yesterday. As you complete the application it should be step 10 “event scheduling”.  I think you should be able to see the steps on the left side menu. If you submitted or saved the application, you can probably go back and edit.

      Hi All,

Anyone having issues of Academic Center not showing as an option. I can’t even search for it. My daughter is current 6th grader so is appropriate for application.

      Thanks
