As we wait to find out whether my daughter gets any offers from the selective high schools, we are also trying to evaluate the Lincoln Park High School “Double Honors” and IB programs. We are not in the boundaries, so she would need to rank and be accepted to these programs to attend. My kid is smart and academically motivated and looking forward to a challenging (but also fun) H.S. experience.
Unfortunately, we were out of town during the open house this weekend, so we are struggling to gather up-to-date information.
How do the LPHS Honors & IB programs differ and relate to each other? Are the kids really grouped and separate from on another, or is it more mixed together? I have heard some rumors that one can switch between them and/or have access to all the classes offered in each program (regardless of which program you’re in), but haven’t got a clear picture. Can anyone confirm or explain this?
I’m also interested in general opinions about these two programs and their student culture, the rigor, competitiveness (in both the good and bad way), etc, and anything else you think we can/should consider. Thanks!

Lincoln Park High School will host an in-person IB (International Baccalaureate) Information Session on Wednesday, November 30th from 6:00 pm -7:30 PM in the school’s Main Building Auditorium (2001 North Orchard).
This session will provide 8th grade students and their families with information about the benefits of an IB education in general, the advantages of “doing IB” at Lincoln Park, and the many IB subjects, activities, and sports Lincoln Park has available. This event will include an opportunity to speak with students, teachers, and staff and to tour both the Freshman Building and the Main Building.
We ask that you register for the event on the school’s website and that no more than two people accompany the 8th grader.

Anyone have any insights/opinions as to why the LPHS Double Honors (HH) has a significantly higher cut score (823) than the IB Diploma program (754) this year? It seems that graduating with the actual IB Diploma is quite rigorous and prestigious from a good school like LP, but it’s puzzling why the HH is considered more desirable/selective. Are the neighborhood kids applying to LP only focusing on HH with their 50+ neighborhood preference advantage? Wouldn’t that neighborhood advantage also apply to IB Dip? The only thing I could possibly think of is that with the AP courses for the HH program, they grade on a 5.0 grade point scale to inflate the overall GPA?

I think things have been going in this direction for a while. IB has a reputation for being a LOT of homework, so it’s simply become less popular than the HH program.

Yes, of the 2 programs, the IB Diploma Program is the more rigorous of the two, and students will benefit way more by going through that process if they are successful at the end of it, so it is puzzling why the Double Honors program has higher numbers. But for any kid to pursue the IB Diploma, and be successful, its much better preparation for college work.

I have a sophomore in the LP HH program and an 8th grader on the way. We are NOT in the neighborhood and both kids put HH above IB. For mine, it’s a great program. Not so intense and not so much homework as IB. Plus mine just want to pick their own classes and the sophomore loves the AP classes. All that said, she’s a bright kid who needs a challenge and the HH classes as well as AP are very good. I’m so impressed by this school. The IB thing is great too. I think the heavy lift of IB comes Junior/Senior year and it’s my understanding kids can transfer in from HH as long as they get reccomendations but don’t quote me on that.

Does anyone know how much movement to expect on the HH wait list? I’m hoping that at least one of mine can move out of the IB program in to HH.

You can transfer at any time from IB into the normal HH program after enrollment – the school mentioned this multiple times during open house and again during presentations at our school. But there’s not much difference fresh/sophomore year. What is the rationale for changing so soon?

Chances for #6 waitlist number for lincoln honors/double honors, and #7 for lincoln IB diploma? The numbers haven’t been budging. I plan on moving to lincoln park and attending lphs. I took IB high school classes in middle school and I’m not sure if I can be programmed into the next corresponding IB courses if i dont get into the IB programs.
