Does anyone know when CPS Tiers are updated? Or if there are any historical Tier maps somewhere online?
I checked my Tier at the end of 2022 and I swear it was different than what I see now. Both times, I checked at: https://schoolinfo.cps.edu/schoollocator/index.html?overlay=tier
Maybe I’m remember wrong, but I thought I was in Tier 3. I distinctly remember noticing that some parts of my neighborhood were Tier 2, but not my address. Today, my address shows as Tier 2.
Also, just a comment that the tiers in my neighborhood are a joke. Our neighborhood expanded south in the 90’s and 00’s, and the newer houses are double (or more) the value of the older ones. Our neighborhood has seven sections: one Tier 1, four Tier 2, and two Tier 3. But because of the way they split it up (which makes no sense to anyone who is familiar with our neighborhood), many of the higher value homes are somehow “Tier 2” while an entire “Tier 3” area is composed of lower value homes. In my neighborhood, a $360k home is Tier 2 while a $85k home is Tier 3. It’s not like these homes are outliers, they are surrounded by similar homes. It doesn’t make sense.

They have been updated for a couple weeks. CPS officially announced the update today though. Good for you that you are now in tier 2!

They were updated last night (and announced today), not weeks ago. This map is no longer being used by GoCPS, though it’s still linked on the main CPS page, and its tiers are out of date and inaccurate: https://schoolinfo.cps.edu/schoollocator/index.html

Thanks for sharing! It’s interesting that they have two slightly different websites with the Tier maps. Seems like one is within the general CPS website and the other is within GoCPS. They appear to have all the same information, but the general CPS website map seems more user friendly to me (easier to zoom in and out and do other things).

They JUST updated the map early today, though. We heard they were updated yesterday, looked and we were still tier 3. Looked this morning and we are now tier 4. And now that is reflected in GoCPS student info as well.
Just want to reiterate that CPS COULD do these tier changes between June and December and no kid would be in the situation mine is where she spent weeks thinking her score was good enough to get into her first choice and now finds out it likely isn’t.
And I agree about tiers being a joke. We’ve lived in the same spot 20+ years while our neighborhood has drastically gentrified and we are still broke.
It’s like they go out of their way to find new ways to make this process more cruel.

I’m so sorry, it is so unfair. At this point, maybe they need to rank each family individually based on their income/personal stats 😥 That would probably be too much work to be feasible, but it doesn’t seem like tiers always work the way they are meant to work (and I question the accuracy of the underlying data itself).

Tier overlays have not been updated, yet individual addresses have been updated for months when you search for them.

Why is it ok for CPS to update tiers after the HS application deadline. If tiers are updated yearly, fine. However, changing them after applications were submitted is just cruel and disgusting.
Students followed all the steps and thought they met their ranked schools.
How is it ok to sabotage?

Im in tier 4 with 884 points. I got waitlisted 5 for Lane Tech and 9 for Northside. How high is the chance of me getting in?

I think you’ve got a great chance! And great score, you should be proud.
Also remember that there are hundreds of kids who get in w/ much less scores than you and their families are just as well off as yours in all likelyhood. The tier system is about the laziest way possible to determine need, is full of corruption, and just stinks all around.

Frankly, I’m SHOCKED you are waitlisted that high for Northside. It actually doesn’t make any sense.

This should be in the news and cps must assign seats based on the tier we initially applied. This is discrimination toward children who for no reason did not get a seat due to moving to a higher tier. How could they expect children to get a higher score in February? UNFAIR, UNJUST!! It shout e in the news and CPS needs to backtrack or accommodate families who were affected due to this. They have a lot of seats in the name of Principal discretion. Our children deserves the seat they applied for. We can’t let this happen.

All affected parents should call ABC7 news and report it. We can only win it if we are UNITED. Please fight for your child’s seat.

A lot of people might say the tiers are unfair to begin with. It’s cruel if not unconscionable to move a kid from say 3 to 4 in the middle of the process. But was it “your child’s seat” ? If your child could only get a seat if he/she were still in 3, they were effectively taking a seat from a tier 4 kid who scored higher. The whole system is brutal and unfair.

I am not in favor of tier system. But right now that is what CPS has. So, they should accommodate those children who were affected by the sudden change. They are even testing in Spring. That means they can accommodate children who did not test in fall. So, why should only few students be left behind who worked on time, tested on time, got the scores that needed based on the tier that the results were published? Don’t they deserve their school of choice if they fall within the cut off score.

Some kids moved down a tier with the change. Should they be placed according to the old tier? I agree it’s awful and cruel to change but so is the tier system itself

Do you actually know of any kid who moved down a tier in the second, March reshuffling??

Within my neighborhood, there is a small section that moved from Tier 3 to Tier 2. I know 1 student who was impacted but not really because this student would have gotten into any school regardless of tier.

I am not telling that as well. It is not their fault . But it is also not the fault of the children who were moved up after the results were published. So, can we support them. They also have rights . And Cps has more seats that they can accommodate because they will test kids who did test in fall again in spring. It is unfair to change the process in the middle. Every deserves to be treated fairly by CPS. It is for them to find out a way to accommodate the children ,since they created the mess by not changing the tier in Fall , but in Spring. It is their problem not the parents. So, I am not blaming any child or parent or tier.

I never heard that there was spring testing. This is for SEHS?

They are only testing students who DID NOT ALREADY TEST in the spring. Spring testing is for kids who didn’t move to Chicago until March, not a 97/97 who wants to try to boost their score to 99/99 by retaking the HSAT.

@cps-thoughts, if there is another test in spring which is for those who have not moved to Chicago as you mentioned, does this mean that there are seats set aside for this group since they are testing late?

The spring HSAT exam is to get a point total for those who did not apply in the priority fall application period. The seats are for any REMAINING spots left after the first notification round offers are accepted or declined. In the past, this was known as the “End of Year Citywide Application” and the selective enrollment schools that had seats were South Shore and King. This year Westinghouse is becoming more popular, with a high score of 898. The point rubrics are also required for schools like Military Academies, IB programs, CTE, etc and any of those programs with leftover seats will also fill in this “rolling waitlist” round (in prior years known as “second round”). There truly are a vast number of high school programs to apply for beyond the 5 selective enrollment high schools that everyone tends to hear about.

Does anyone know the score of a kid getting selected in Skinner north for 2023 -24 year who belong to Tier 4 ?
Please let me know my kids score M/E : 99/97 and is showing waitlist on all the selective program out of 6 selected school.
