I can’t speak on Bronzeville, but I have a child that goes to Poe. There are pros and cons as far as I can see:
PROS
According to schooldigger.com, Poe is ranked 19th out of 2067 elementary schools academically. It’s a good school community that I think is partially because it is small. There’s only one class per grade, the teachers and students know each other and support each other. My child knows children from K-8, and for the most part, all the children are nice to each other.
Poe is one of the schools where school busing is starting back on a limited basis.
There are a LOT of after-school activities. Band, basketball, flag football, roller skating, robotics, cheerleading, academic interventions, chess, STEAM, Book Club, etc.
CONS
Not the best neighborhood. Over the last year or so, there have been a couple “soft lockdowns” where kids had to be redirected back into the school because of issues going on in the neighborhood. This is the last year of the contract for the principal. We’re not sure if his contract will be renewed beyond this year.
There has been a lot of teacher turnover lately, and in particular, last year’s Kindergarten and Assistant Principal have left over. Losing the kindgergarten teacher, in my opinion, was a big loss. She was great with the kids and the parents. The Assistant Principal kept the school community informed and was big on communication, that is being missed.
