My child is applying to 2nd grade classical program and received a score of 98/98 in both math and reading. His friend received the same scores, but was placed two or three spots ahead of my kid at the same schools (with the same ranking). The website states that tie-breakers for the same math and reading scores are determined by a lottery.

Does that mean we were just unlucky? or could there be hidden decimal points behind the scores shown on the website? Could the date of birth also be a factor?

They may have also had different raw scores for reading and math. I don’t recall off the top of my head whether raw math or reading is used first in tie breakers, but in the event the percentile is the same, I believe rankings are based on raw scores. If raw scores are the same, then it goes to lottery.

Classical school in non-entry grades is SUPER competitive, even with a 98th percentile score. My child applied for 5th and got 98/98 on the classical test but a 300 on the gifted test. She is waitlisted everywhere we applied, but is positioned much higher on the RGC lists.
