Looking for advice from parents with experience at Bell RGC and Skinner North middle schools. Our child is currently at Bell RGC and will be entering 6th grade. If they don’t get into an Academic Center for 7th grade, would you stay at Bell RGC or choose Skinner North? I’m especially interested in comparisons of the middle school (6–8) experience: academics, teachers, school culture, and preparation for selective enrollment high schools. Thanks in advance for any insights!

I think the social aspect plays a huge role at this age, and it is often overlooked when comparing schools based solely on academics. We are at Bell RGC as well and absolutely love it.
We have many friends at Skinner North and have been able to observe the differences quite closely. In our experience, Skinner North tends to be a more academically driven and competitive environment (especially when it comes to ELA). Bell RGC, by contrast, feels more relaxed and balanced while still providing plenty of academic challenge. The rigor is there, but it is delivered in a more holistic way that places equal emphasis on social-emotional development, creativity, and overall well-being (do not you love those projects? :)).
We actually received offers from Skinner North both last year and this year for elementary school. We test for benchmarking purposes, and we are happy to see that Bell RGC prepares our child so well that he continues to receive offers from Skinner North. Ultimately, however, we decided to decline those offers because we felt Bell RGC was a better fit for our child. For us, the decision came down primarily to the social and emotional environment. We wanted our child to be challenged academically, but also to have a childhood that feels balanced and grounded. Bell RGC, as you know, offers so many enrichment opportunities, including Lookingglass Theatre program, poets-in-residence, Chinese dance, improv, and free OST, among many others.
Another factor was diversity of experience. Our impression is that Skinner North can feel somewhat insulated, almost like a bubble, whereas Bell RGC exposes children to a broader range of backgrounds, personalities, and perspectives. We believe that is an important part of a child’s growth and development.
The overall culture of the two schools is also quite different. Neither approach is inherently right or wrong, and both are excellent schools, but Bell RGC’s community and philosophy align much more closely with what we want for our child and family. For us, it has been the right combination of strong academics, social development, and a supportive, well-rounded environment. I would not send my child from Bell RGC to Skinner North for the 7th grade for sure.
