Anyone know…
(1) Do all SEES offer buses? If not ,which SEES offer buses?
(2) Is there a standard distance from school range that buses are offered (1.5 miles – X.X. miles)
(3) How long might a bus trip be for my kid?

According to our school, if you live 1.5 miles away from the school you should be eligible for bus transportation. Our oldest son’s school starts at 7:40 and we live about 20 mins away from school. He has to be at the bus at 6:50a. The length of time will be determined by how far away you live and how many stops they have to make. We only have 6 kids on our bus so it’s a pretty quick commute.

James – I believe the upper limit for busing is 6 miles, but I am not sure.
Hope I am not hijacking the thread, but can someone explain the Park Kids program? I gather a student can be dropped off by their school bus at a Chicago Park District park where they are supervised? Is this program in lieu of a formal after school program at the school itself?

The upper limit is six miles I believe for all SEES. So 1.5 to 6. If you are more than 3-4 miles from the school, pickup times can typically be an hour prior to school start time. I believe the earliest time I’ve heard of is 90 min prior to the start of school.

Some schools do not have boundaries and the only requirement is you live at least 1.5 miles away. Check the school website.
I know Keller RGC is an example of no boundaries, just have to live in the city

For those who use the bus, at what age do kids usually start taking the bus? I’m having a hard time picturing putting my 5 year old on a bus but realize that’s the most practical solution. How many kids are typically on each bus? What’s the process what’s they get to school and for getting kids on the bus at school?

@James — For regional gifted centers (except Carnegie, Coonley, and NTA) transportation is provided to students who reside more than 1.5 miles from the school with no maximum distance limit. Carnegie attendees must live between 3900 and 7500 south. NTA attendees must live between 500 and 5900 south & East of Cicero. Coonley attendees must live north of 900 north. No idea on the time it would take.
@Dad2Two — Park Kids drops your child off at a designated park in the afternoon instead of their district school where they get picked up in the morning. You submit an application for school transportation. And then you submit an additional form for Park Kids. Both applications go to the school and are due by June 22.
There are more policies and you can read about them here.
I am by no means an expert. I got this information from a CPS policy guide.
