My daughter is trying to decide how to rank the SEES schools in her application. Based on our location and the commutes, we are looking closely at Lane, Jones and Payton. Will people with inside information let me know:
– How is the academic atmosphere in these schools? I’ve heard rumor about competitiveness (even “toxic” atmosphere) at Payton, and also about a lack of seriousness at Jones, but I don’t really know how much weight to give those rumors. Do you have thoughts or information?
– My child is a capable but not stellar athlete. Will she fit in on any athletic teams at these schools? I understand Lane is a powerhouse and you have to be very competitive to participate — is that true?
– What about the school leadership? Will the current kerfuffle at Jones affect the school/students? What’s the outlook there? And is Payton’s new principle up to the task?
THANKS!

10th grader at Whitney Young. Not a stellar athlete but is still able to participate in multiple different sports teams. Principal change this year. Definitely is not the same dynamic character as Dr. Kenner who pumped the school up at every turn. We shall see. My biggest complaint is the Math teachers. Two years in a row with math teachers that don’t teach. My child was a super math student and is losing interest quickly because they think they are not suited for math. The two teachers they’ve had don’t use a textbook, and assign homework without teaching the lesson leaving students to flounder trying to figure out what they are supposed to do with homework with no reference to a textbook. Multiple classes where the teacher did not show up for work the entire year and a substitute was assigned that did not teach. The students essentially had a study hall for the whole year for a history class. Contacting the principal did not change anything. I’m sure this happens at all the high schools but I am unimpressed for such a highly ranked school.

Thanks for this perspective. Hopefully things improve for you WY student — was the teaching issue maybe a fallout from COVID?

Lane 10th grader parent: Academic atmosphere is really what your kid makes of it. Lots of pressure to take AP classes, but I would recommend backing off those a bit since the remainder of academic rigor is well balanced. Athletics – there are many no-cut sports, I believe track and field, cross-country, and lacrosse? So sports are always a possibility if your child is interested. School leadership is great, the principal sends regular communications and I am pleasantly surprised how responsive the school is to any questions given their size.
I will say with the size of Lane, it may be hard for your child to find their place. I would encourage you strongly recommend to your child (should they go to Lane) to join a club or sport as early as possible to make the school feel a bit smaller – there is definitely something for everyone at Lane!
