GuestHi my son is currently at McPherson RGC and he got offer from Pritzker RGC. I think Pritzker is slightly better school than McPherson but I’m little bit concerned about should we switch his school or not.
Also he got offer from Hawthorne Scholastic Academy as well. I heard Hawthorne is pretty good school(ranking #14 in Illinois public school) and we live 5 minutes walking distance. Hawthorne is 100% lottery and usually almost impossible to get in.
If someone has any experience about Hawthorne please share with me.
His current school teaching reading, writing and math basically 1 or 2 grade ahead. I’m very interested Hawthorne but little bit concerned about curriculum and academic part. Thanks in advance.

GuestRGC mom here with two kids attending. Hawthorne is a good school, but you will never quite get the RGC environment there. There is simply something special when kids are admitted through testing. We know several Hawthorne students who test for RGC and Classical schools every year but cannot get in. You have a different problem 🙂

GuestThanks for your opinion!!

GuestHi Sue– are your kids at Pritzker RGC? My daughter was just offered a seat in Kindergarten there. Would love to chat with you about your experience if you’re open to it.

GuestI’m in this exact situation. My child is incoming kindergarten, got into McPherson RGC and Hawthorne and was wondering which school to go to. I guess I’ll tour this week and see. Thank you perspective.

Jomom
GuestPlease share what do you think after take Hawthorne school tour. We can’t attend next week tour.
-
Trollingmom
GuestThe tour was good. Started off with a presentation and overview of school, ranking, parental feedback. They have 3 kindergarten classes and break the kids into smaller, rotating groups. The classrooms were large. They also utilitze the basement of the school which looks like a slightly crumbling basement. Overall the principal and assistant principal seem engaged and the school seemed good. The 845am start is pretty late but free drop-off can occur starting 815am.

GuestThanks for share your opinion! We will attend 3/31 school tour!

GuestSimilar situation – we got a K offer for SN and are waitlisted #4 for Hawthorne. Would love any insight
-
Val
GuestCongratulations! Accept the offer, SN is exceptional 😊
-
ChiDad
GuestThanks for the feedback! We have a younger kid and that’s the only thing giving us pause right now. Do you have a kid at SN now? Any downsides to be aware of?
-
Birdie
Guest@ChiDad I have a child in K there right now, and it’s truly an exceptional school. One downside is that some parents can be very competitive and push their kids quite hard, which isn’t really our approach. Academically, SN starts at a faster pace — they begin with a 1st-grade curriculum, while schools like Hawthorne typically start at a traditional K level. Historically, a high percentage of students from SN go on to selective enrollment high schools, often at higher rates than many other schools in the area. If the location works for your family, I would definitely consider it.

GuestI’m not so familiar about waitlist system,so If I’m wrong please correct me.
For RGC I got offer from Pritzker but not first choice. If declined, my son will be on waitlist for our first choice school right?
If we will accept Hawthorne’s offer, can we still wait for first choice of RGC school waitlist?-
Val
GuestYes, different lists!
-
Jomom
GuestThanks!

ABCparent
GuestIf the score exceeds cut score then yes you’d be added to waitlist for your preferred SEES.
-
ChiMama
GuestAfter you decline you will have to add yourself back into those waitlists. It isn’t automatic. But they are re-ordered by score every night so it’s not like you are adding to the end.
-
Jpmom
GuestIs that possible to add my son’s name to multiple school waitlist? Is that possible to add name and remove name anytime? Because I wanted to know which waitlist # each school and want to decide which school we want to focus on.

GuestI am in a similar position! My son got into Bell RGC and Hawthorne. We are closer to Hawthorne so I am leaning towards sending him there given the academics seem really strong and they seem to have better after care. We were also accepted to Catherine Cook. I would love to hear thoughts!
-
ChiDad
GuestCan you elaborate on the after care comment? I personally would rate Bell ahead of Hawthorne but not by much

ABCparent
GuestIf you have another younger kid I’d send to Hawthorne 💯 unless you’re good with McPherson as a choice option. I personally would send to Hawthorne.
-
Jpmom
GuestI have a only child.

GuestIf we are currently on a RGC waitlist, will our position change after rolling waitlist depending on how others rank RGC? Or is that only with Choice schools?
-
Birdie
GuestIt will change. Kids with stronger score will go to the top of the list. On the positive note, kids that get another offers – will drop off from the WL.

GuestHow far down the waitlist does McPherson usually go? We also have an offer at Hawthorne, and a spot at Inter-American Magnet. We’ve been quite happy there. Is Hawthorne really great? I didn’t love the building itself, but it wasn’t the worst. I know it’s ranked really well. We have a younger kid as well so a guaranteed spot is really nice.
-
Jpmom
GuestIt depends on which grade. My son’s class had 4 new students joined last year. My friend’s son was #14 waitlist but still got offer call.

GuestNot all classes at Hawthorne provide the same level of rigor as it is not a selective school and there are wide ranges of achievement. It heavily depends on the class that your child is placed in from year to year. There is also a LOT of homework. Kids/families sometimes feel quite stressed out by this… as they get older, it starts feeling like a lot of pressure and like the focus is on test scores/prep. I would stick to a RGC.
-
ChiDad
GuestHi @Lee86 – is the placement in different classes based on any sort of assessment at beginning of the year or something else? Would you say the homework is more than what say a SN student would get?
-
Birdie
GuestWe don’t have a lot of homework in K

GuestDoes anyone know how much the Hawthorne waitlist usually moves?
-
ChiDad
GuestWe asked the principal this question and she mentioned it rarely goes past low single digits
-
seaelle
GuestI figured. Bummer. We’re in the 30s.

GuestDoes anyone have insights or estimates whether the waitlist for first grade at Hawthorne will move at all?
-
GBM
GuestDoes anyone know when the deadline is to register for K at Hawthorne after accepting a K offer? Trying to read more tea leaves in terms of whether there will be any movement on the waitlist for Hawthorne (sigh). Thanks in advance.
