What are your thoughts on this new process? I reached out to gocps for more information, still waiting.

I’m not sure how this makes it a more equitable process since the SE exams were the ones that it takes more effort to drive to etc during non-school hours. NWEA is generally delivered during school.
I don’t like that this will put additional pressure on 7th graders. A single B in a core course will crush most tier 4 hopes for a SE admission because grades are not 50% of the criteria. The system is not great, and i think the more data points to measure the better. This makes a high stakes process even more high stakes and will continue to contribute to the amount of tier fraud that is already happening.

Yeah it would be cool if CPS did one thing. Take all the combos from last year who got into all the selective schools and subtract the NWEA from them and tell us how many points those people got on the test and their grades. I don’t know if they can even do this, but they can do this without sharing any information?

I am not a fan of the new process. We have 2 kids. My 8th grader got into one of the SEHS. While I am happy for her, I feel my other two will have less information to make application decisions and more pressure to get A’s and to score perfectly on the exam. For the 8th grader, we had the NWEA, grades, worth 2/3 of total points ahead of time. Then, he just had to focus and on doing well on the exam. In our opinion, having knowledge of 2/3 of the total points going into the application process such as school selections and ranking. Now, the younger one will be applying soon but we are going into this with knowledge of only 50% of total points, that doesnt give us much to work with in terms of planning which schools to apply to and in ranking them. It will also contribute to higher anxiety due to the fact that we would have no idea what to expect until the very end when decisions come out. But that’s just our opinion, I’m sure other families feel it’s positive for them.

Well I suppose the cutoff scores might go down by a lot. For example, to get into Lane from Tier 2 the cutoff score was an 807. Now assuming that people who received an 807 got the 300 points for their NWEA scores, this leaves us with 507 points. Even if 300 points are given for the grades, which now brings it to a 207, this means that this person would have to score a 68% on the test to get in. I don’t really think that someone would get such a low score on the test which means it would probably have to do with their grades. So this means that even though now each ‘B’ is going to take away less points from the combo compared to this year, 25 points, other people are also going to B’s. I really don’t even know if I explained what I wanted to say because this just got a whole lot confusing without the NWEA.
