      Hi all,

This forum is so helpful. We are applying for 1st grade and want to apply for both RGC and classical programs. How far apart did you have your kiddo take each test and which test did you take first?

Hello. We usually would start with RGC test in Nov and study for it in October, and then we would study for Classical test (Math and English) in November to take it in December. This way it is easier for kids as well. Good luck!

        Thank you for this.

May I ask how you study for the RGC test? For the Classical it feels pretty straight forward.

If you have any advice or study prep for both that would be beyond helpful.

I am completely confused. The current application system (the one for this fall that will be closing on Nov. 14th) forces you to schedule a single “testing event” (despite all the current CPS information on their site leading one to believe there are TWO different in-person tests conducted on the same day for RGC and Classical), REGARDLESS of if you only were applying to one type or the other (Classical only or RGC only). Was there a time when these events were allowed to be scheduled separately? I feel that would be the most fair to the child, because two in one day is a lot for a 4 year old.

You do have to take separate tests for 1st grade and above. Kindergarten students do not take separate tests. They are given at the same time

I agree with KG above. There’s only one test date.

There is one test date for kindergarteners. I am not applying for kindergarten. I am applying for first grade, therefore, there are two test dates

If you’re testing for kindergarten, they administer the Gifted and Classical exams in a single session. This is typical, and if it used to be done differently, it was not any time recently. It also generally doesn’t take that long. I personally witnessed some kids test for as little as 10-15 minutes. Occasionally it will rin an hour or more, but that seems to be rare. My children both tested for about 45 minutes. I would not have enjoyed having to split that up into two separate sessions of about 20 minutes each, especially since I had to take a day off of work to do it.

If you test for 1st grade or above, the Classical and Gifted tests are separate events, and if you only apply for one type of program, you only take one test.

What I meant was, since we don’t know the order of the tests (and 4 year olds aren’t known for great attention spans), it is inherently unfair to test a child for a school they aren’t even applying for (Classical only or RGC only). Why would CPS waste their time and resources doing this?

I don’t think the test is that long truly. One of my peer parents said that her kiddo was in there for only 15 minutes. I think they are considering that 4 year olds won’t hold attention better than older children that is why one test for both. Also most people are applying for both RGC and classical since most schools have entering grades of K. Older students don’t apply as frequently (I mean they do but not greater than K)

Think about the hundreds of application that they have to sift through.
