Hello! We have received an offer to Coonley for 2nd grade. Would appreciate any insights out there to help us consider if it may be a good fit for our child. Many thanks!

Academically speaking, the school is solid, though its lack of diversity is apparent. Due to significant annual fundraising, it tends to operate more like a private institution, where substantial financial contributions seemingly grant parents a strong influence over administrative decisions. While the majority of the community is highly tight-knit, it often fosters (perhaps unknowingly) an exclusive, bubble-like environment that sidelines alternative viewpoints and other key stakeholders. The teaching staff is fantastic, though the lack of transparency in the relationship between the faculty and administration is noticeable. So, I think it depends on what you are looking for in both your school experience as a parent and that of your child’s experience.

I can’t speak specifically to that. I think it is fair to share that a lot of parents would say if your child is performing at grade level with minimal needs, the school is a great fit, but if they are performing below or above, it may not be a great fit. They are trying to work on that with the implementation of an acceleration program for high performers, but, again, I can’t speak to that.

@cps2000 do you have any other info on the acceleration program? Even who to reach out to? We have an offer to Coonley Kindergarten and that is one of our only questions, on how they handle high performers.

Hi @parmand – I would suggest reaching out to the principal as I don’t believe acceleration is an option until 5th or 6th grade and incorporates standardized test scores and additional testing.

This describes a lot of the Lakeview CPS elementary schools pretty well.
