S&J’s MomGuest
Hi there! We’re applying for Kindergarten and I’m trying to understand the timing of the gifted test. If we apply to RGCs now, can we schedule the test for a few months from now (late December / January) or would it have to be something more near term (November / December)?
I know testing dates will continue to be added as needed, but I wasn’t sure if that was primarily done to accommodate reschedules and later applicants. I was hoping we could go ahead and submit our application now, but schedule the test a little further out so we have some time to “prep” (used loosely as I realize there’s not a ton you can do here).
I called the GoCPS hotline today and they weren’t much help, so hoping someone here can provide some clarity on scheduling. Thanks!

You can sign up for any available test date. If it’s listed as an option in the event portion of the application, it’s available for anyone to choose right now. Choosing an earlier date will probably make things easier if your child gets sick or you NEED to reschedule for some reason, but otherwise if they have late Dec/Jan dates available, you can go for it if you want.

Does anyone know if the same RGC/Classical tests are given to kids who test in November-December v. January-February? Or is the expectation that the kids testing in January-February will need to know more and therefore the test may be harder?

My understanding is it is the same test, but the score they get is normed to their age at the time they take the test. This in theory compensates for the difference in taking the test a few months earlier or later.
To my understanding the age norming is only done with the kindergarten test, though maybe someone else can confirm that.

I had inquired about first grade and was told the gifted test was age normed then as well. The classical was normed based on time in semester (so not age, but fall vs winter/spring would have different norming of scores).

Yes, this is what we understood as well. The earlier the better in November. Otherwise a child may be losing points if he takes the test in winter/spring.

Interesting about the norming. So if student takes in December before whiter break vs January, does it make a difference?

Not sure what you mean by norming but in the past the child’s chronological age was considered in the scoring. I don’t know what the split is for the algorithm. For example, if they go by 6 month variation or monthly to fact the algorithm.
I remember calling OAE once about this and they knew the answer.
Also, with gifted testing, it is IQ type testing so there is not a lot of change a far as cognitive preparation. Emotional preparation is different as that can change in a month or two.

The norm monthly. So a child testing at 4 years and 11 months will be compared against the children with the same age of 4 years and 11 months.

Thx. Do they norm for 1st grade too? If so, how?
