Our daughter just turned 5 and I’d like to help her prepare for the classical school test. She will enter kindergarten this coming year at a Montessori and take the CPS test this Fall presumably. It’s very hard to find useful data about what she’s expected to know.
(1) For parents whose kids got into Skinner and other classical schools, how did you prepare? Any books or services you recommend?
(2) Any information about what she is expected to know for the test?
Any help is much appreciated.

Since she will be testing for 1st grade and classical schools work at least 1 grade above, she would be expected to know math and reading/ELA at 2-3 grade level. I would use workbooks like Brain Quest or similar for 2nd and 3rd grade.

Thanks for the info but I am confused. She is applying to enter 1st grade. Presumably they will test her (as a Kindergarten student next year) to see if she is already at 1st grade level or close to it?
The students currently entering the classical program Kindergarten in the Fall are presumably going to learn 1st grade material this coming year and she should be at a comparable level.

You are absolutely right. K kids need to know 1 grade material during the test and 1 grade kids need to know 2 grade material and so on. When my son tested for 1 grade, we prepared him for 2 grade just in case. He said there were never any 2 grade questions (he knew what those were as we were going through them in advance of the test), so I would not worry about 2-3 grade material if you are taking the test to enter 1 grade. The same theory was supported by many other parents who we talked to. Some people just prepare their kids for higher grade questions thinking there may be a few questions and they could score higher, but I doubt this is needed.

Hi Ann. We’re done with the gifted test and now I’m trying to figure out how to prepare her for the classical test. I’ve heard it’s common core math at 1st grade level and maybe reading at 1st grade level? Do you mind if I ask what you used to prepare your son for the classical test? I’m assuming it’s not cogat-like questions on the classical test. TIA.

Your daughter already took both tests in the same session. If you put both classical and gifted schools on your application, you’ll see scores for both in the spring.

That’s how it works for Kindergarten entry. When you’re applying for 1st grade, there are two separate tests. I am curious about how people prepared their kids for that classical test. Ours is scheduled for next month.

Kids that turn 4 in the summer and test in the fall to get into K next year are expected to know K-1st grade material, even though they are technically Pre-K. So the same would apply for a kid testing this fall to get into 1st grade next year (as @ES mentioned, should learn and know materials 1-2 grade levels ahead).
Classical schools offer challenging instruction and accelerated curriculum. Even if the SEES test starts off by testing your child at their current level, if they are not able to keep up with the harder questions as the test runs on, they will unlikely obtain a high score. You are also competing for the 1-2 spots that open up each year when you apply after K, so only applicants with the highest scores will be considered.

hello my daughter is in 7th grade. applying to 8th grade, she’s taking the classical exam in a week. Does anyone have any idea on what she should study to prepare or what types of questions it asks? What grade level is it 7th grade I’m assuming?
