Any current NCP families with insight into the environment at the school?
We unfortunately missed the open house & I have heard both good & “bad” from friends with kids there in the past. Looking for fresh takes—especially since I think there’s been new leadership in the last year or so? What is the principal like? What’s the vibe? How’s diversity (especially LGBTQ+)?
Thanks!

I have one currently a senior and a current 8th grader who will most likely also be attending, as it is her first choice (900 score, tier 2).
We have been exceptionally pleased with Northside. Diversity is wonderful, both in terms of race/ethnicity and LGBTQ. Mostly great teachers, nurturing and kind environment, lots of good arts options. I think the nicest thing about the school is that everybody from administration to teachers and students and even staff like janitors are kind and treat others respectfully. There is just quite a bit of kindness and respect schoolwide. It doesn’t have the competitive feel of some of the other selective enrollments.
The new principal seems fine. There have been some bumps with parent communication that they have been working on diligently, so hopefully that will continue to improve. We do miss the old principal though!
I know some people seem scared of the Northside homework load, but we have not experienced it being problematic. With the block schedule, kids have plenty of time to get homework done, and it is rarely more than an hour or two a night.
Happy to answer any more questions!

Thanks so much @NerdMom! How has the college counseling process been for your senior?

I’m probably not the best person to answer that since my senior is doing a college specialty program and the admissions process is totally different. But they have been very helpful with financial aid information and other such subjects.

What is college specialty program??

I’d rather not be specific because it will definitively identify my kid, but it is a program based on audition rather than academics for the most part.

My child is a 9th grader at NCP. She loves it. She doesn’t play sports at Northside, but has been able to join many clubs and organizations through which she’s made some great new friendships.
Homework load is fine. It’s not outrageous at all….thank you block schedule!
Principal is fine, but not exceptional. Hopefully, she’s still just getting her footing. One of the asst principals seems to be the one who actually does all the work. He’s wonderful.
School is very diverse and open to all. Kids are openly LGBTQ+ there with no issues that I’ve heard of. It’s a great school filled with, great, well rounded kids. The “nerdside” reputation seems to be on it’s way out.
