We moved here during my kid’s 4th grade year. He took the Classical and RBC tests and scored 297/300 and 252.5/300 (141 composite) respectively. He’s #8 on Skinner’s waitlist for 26/27. He qualified for single-subject acceleration starting this year (5th grade). We are tier 4 and in a highly rated neighborhood school.
I’m thinking about having him try again for entry into 6th grade, maybe with some test prep (we didn’t do prep before), so he can be at Skinner for 6th-8th and hopefully get some more challenging work as single-subject acceleration doesn’t seem like it’ll be enough. But is it silly to basically write off pursuing AC for 7/8 grade? Should I have him stick it out at the neighborhood school and try for AC admission in 7th instead? I don’t want him to move twice so if he gets into Skinner, he’ll stay there until high school.

It’s highly unlikely that there will be any spots available for 6th grade. It’s definitely worth trying, but I wouldn’t count on it. Your child would also need to score higher than the other applicants to be #1 on the waitlist, so that if a spot does unexpectedly become available, they would be first in line for an offer.

I agree that SN seems to rarely offer for 6th grade, but my child started in the mid teens on the 6th grade waitlist this year and received an offer in late June. This might have been a one-off year due to budget changes, but it wouldn’t hurt to try. I think ACs are also far from guaranteed. I would try for SEES for 6th and see how it goes before deciding.
