CPS will release high school offers for any programs applied to via the GoCPS applications (SEHS & Choice Programs) on 3/18/22 after 5pm. Decisions are due by 4/1/22 and waitlists open on 4/6/22.
Please feel free to post results to share. Applicants may be offered ONE school per application type (one Selective Enrollment HS offer and one Choice offer) and their neighborhood school is always available for them to attend at any time.
If you are commenting about SEHS offers, please include your Tier, 900 pt total, and what order the school was ranked on your application. If you applied to Choice high schools as well, please include your child’s offer and order it was ranked. Good luck!

Please fill me in. I’m confused. How can you NOT get your 1st choice offer when you have a perfect score(900)?? Regardless of the tier, isn’t 900 perfect score???

900 is the highest score, not a perfect score. Using tiebreakers (subresults), some kids with a score of 900 (in Tier 4) were not offered their first choice.

Yes — it came freon CPS at 4:10pm saying results were on. But it’s 4:40pm and still not viewable.

It’s not a CPS email. My husband just looked at it and said it’s from Chicago GPS and not CPS. Moms shouldn’t try to read emails right before results are due!

These results are interesting. In the past, when MAP scores were used, 900 would guarantee Payton or Northside. So tie-breakers are based on HS Exam?

So this is weird. We’re moving to Chicago this summer but my daughter’s page is completely blank – no data at all, not even her name….and I also didn’t get an email from CPS.

We know at least 1 kid already declined Payton and stays at WY. For us, the close distance makes the decision a no-brainer.

In my opinion, for the kids in the AC who already knew they will be staying at their AC for high school, please don’t apply for other SEHS. It will screw up the cut-off scores. Please be considerate.

Why? Payton is ranked higher. It is vanity. If you ask why people go to MIT, Harvard, Yale, the answers can vary but underneath it all, is vanity. My son is vain and he chooses Payton.

Whitney Young offers more AP courses in Math and Science than Payton. That is why my child is staying at Whitney.
For those at WYAC, when declining another offer in the CPS GO app, it is not showing us the “Continuing High School” offer to stay at the current academic center as per the CPS guide. Is it showing for you?

No, I don’t see an option for staying in the current academic center either. I wouldn’t worry about it because we were told that there is a seat for all AC students if they choose to stay.
As to AP courses, it is a none issue in my opinion. One can a class in a university such as UIC if the student chooses. It is not a big deal. I think Payton offers a type of experience that is unique in some way — a type of intangible.

Yes, those are all the reasons why we can’t make a decision at this point. Location, school rank with Payton vs. more AP & EC with WY. The summer Honors Chemistry class offered from WY is really attractive.

Yes, we’re doing the summer Chem class too so they can take AP Chemistry next year. From what we’re told, Payton’s ranking is only higher because they make it compulsory that all students take AP courses whereas Whitney Young does not.

For some perspective, 15 Payton kids went to MIT/Harvard/Princeton/Yale/Stanford in 2018. It is quite impressive for a single school in my opinion.

Tier 2. 870. Accepted at Jones, our first choice. We only lived in the Tier 2 for this year for Selective Enrollment purposes. We’ll be moving back to our Tier 4 hone in Printers Row as soon as we can and still maintain their eligibility for Jones.

That’s why the CPS proposal to open up more spots for tier 1/2 will really benefit those who can afford to maintain several homes in different tiers and will push out true tier 1/2 kids from this race even more.
One change that would make the process fairer is to determine tier by parents’income, not zip code.

If you are not trolling, I really admire your courage to openly discuss this. Tier system or even system based on income is so easily gamed.

Of course it is. But the system in place would force us to leave the city, but I think the city has lost enough families that look like ours. I refuse to be forced to leave for the benefits of my kids like so many others.

Nothing will make it fairer in this stupid process. Why did CPS have SEHS at the first place? It’s meant for students to compete. It’s stupid to lowering down the standards to accommodate lower achieving students. They could have made every school has the same amount of resources and rigorous curriculums offers. There are 11 SEHS in CPS. The students should go to their neighborhood SEHS so the tier issues is a BS.

We did the exact same thing for our older child at another SE. Someone did report us to the inspector general. However, the CPS cleared us of any wrongdoing. We absolutely will do this again for our youngest. Yes, we had to put up with the issue of the West Town neighborhood during the week, but our kids could continue to go to their previous school so the move was not at all disruptive. We would have a longer commute had we been commuting, but the pandemic took care of that issue. I recommend that other Tier 4 parents explore this option. You can get some fairly nice Tier 2 properties for 325K and then rent them out when the process is over. Just because you move, your children don’t have to change schools. Just be selective about what Tier 2 you choose to move to. Surprisingly, there are many quite nice ones not too far away that are tolerable.

Because I have done nothing wrong. We officially lived in Tier 2 for the selection process. We maintained our previous home but it is not our primary residence. We vote and pay taxes out of the current Tier 2 residence. After we have established Tier 2 residency and admission, we have every right to move. Investigate all anyone wants. It is perfectly legal, the CPS has our previous address. We moved, Now, we are moving back as soon as we have fulfilled the CPS’s requirements.

All that behaviour is not risk-free. Educate yourself on what’s at stake. I am certain that the fraud detection and the deterrent measures will be much tighter if the new admissions process is accepted.

The fact is 1580 SAT score, 15 AP courses, 4.7 GPA, all kinds of extra curriculum activities will not get a child into schools like UCLA if the child doesn’t have the right skin color (true example). College admission is much more a racket than SEHS.

Not sure about that. If this student is not a good fit, then what about other Tier 1/2 students?

True tier 1/2 kids may not have as high scores because they do not have the same resources, yet they are naturally bright, just not exposed to the same enrichment opportunities as their tier 4 counterparts.
In this example, we have a mediocre student from tier 4 who now will have to work extra hard to keep up even with tier 2 students at an SEHS.

I am sorry but that is just a myth being perpetuated without proof. SEHS and AC have those placement tests for math. CPS can easily justify its Tier system by using the results of the placement tests and the grades of the students after enrollment. The fact CPS has offered zero evidence despite years of Tier system says something.

Believe what makes you feel good. We will be flying out in a couple hours to see my son’s future school play in the NCAA tomorrow. Too bad he is mediocre and struggles so much that he won’t enjoy the experience, I guess. Don’t worry, though, I will buy him a nice sweatshirt with his future school’s logo on it to make him feel better.

How do you know the kids in Tier 1/2 don’t have the same resources? In fact, Tier 3 and 4 kids have to work extra hard to earn their seats even they have the resources. Perhaps most Tier 1 and 2 kids didn’t even want to learn and work hard so that’s why CPS has to lower down the cut-off scores for them???? If we give every tiers the same resources for free, I bet 100% the outcome would be the same. The resources are there, it’s not hidden and some are free online too. And there are 6 other SEHS besides the top ones we talk about here. How come no one mentioned Lindbolm, hancock, Brooks, Westinghouse, etc on here?? What happen to those schools? Why can’t the Tier 1/2 go to those schools?? Do those schools have the same funding as other SEHS? What’s the equity here?? I don’t understand.

I suspect a few families are doing exactly the same thing. I heard two kids of affluent families got into SEHS with scores lower than the Tier 4 cut off. These families are wealthy and own many properties. It would be quite easy to pull it off for them.
Here people are naïve to believe that equity can come from forced quota using Tiers. That only benefits those with sufficient resources and determinations who can game the system.
Yes, it is logistically challenging and requires sufficient financial resources but there are far more people who can pull it off than CPS imagined.

We are not the only ones who do this. You would be surprised how many students are staying with grandparents and aunties all over the city to get better opportunities for their kids. Additionally, we are not white nor are we Asian, and my children are underrepresented minorities at their schools.

I see nothing wrong with gaming a system that was designed to propagate racism. Politician’s twisted logic seems: in order to be fair, we have to be unfair. in order to stop racism, we need to enforce racism further.
A proof: When a judge was nominated to the supreme court, people immediately want to know her SAT scores because her skin is black. When a president was graduated from an Ivy league school, people want to know his SAT scores and GPA because his skin is black.
Kids were taught from kindergarten that people are treated differently based their skin colors and how much their parents make. No wonder when they grow up, some want to know the SAT scores based on skin color.
We live in a Tier 4 neighborhood. I have to admit, “buying a Tier 2 house” did cross my mind once, and I even started looking at houses, but decided that it’s too much work than just moving to the burbs. This is our 10th year at CPS. We are thankful to our children of being able to rise to the challenge, so that we can still live in the city.

Not sure if I’m slow but how do tiers tie with race? Wasn’t the point of the tiers system to give a better chance to those who didn’t get to be exposed to the resources richer families did? I’m not in CPS, so I wouldn’t know. I’m a minority and my family does own properties across Chicago, but I could not imagine trying to ultimately cheat my way in as much as I wanted to get into the schools I applied for… My location also classifies as tier 4. Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t most of the latino and black students in lower income areas too? So what purpose does it serve when you’re really just finding loop holes within the system to take allotted spots…

The point is that tier system is an analog of race based quota. Like you said, tier 1, 2 coincide with black and Hispanic residence. Favoring tier 1, 2 is racism in the purest form.
Nobody said it here before but politicians don’t like to see too many Asian faces in top high schools. You can’t say that these Asian kids don’t deserve the seats. It’s also not without reason that you see higher percentage of Asian kids. They often come from immigrants who have been through grueling journey to get to this country. To these families, the test is not a difficult part. Fighting balant racism like the tier system is.

This is exactly what’s wrong with Tier system.
It helps to get lower score students into SEHS, period. The actual students may come from different background.
Even with the Tier system, the ratio of students of Black/Latino background is still lower than the ratio of some politicians desired. So they make the Tier system even more unfair. Since there are loopholes big enough, many wealthy families are taking advantage of this. We may never know the true level of abuse but it does happen.

Maybe, for tier purposes, OAE should change the rules to consider the highest tier over the past 5 years a student has resided in. It should also consider income as well as the games with parental rights, separationsand such . Some will go even that far to game the system, but at least they will have to put up with more inconvenience and for some, it will be a deterrent.

As to people gaming the Tier system: good. Everyone admits the Tier system is a backdoor way to dole out spots based upon a preferred racial hierarchy. I think it is unAmerican to give some races advantages in government benefits and other races are disadvantaged.
People also lose sight of the purpose of magnet schools. When they came about in the 1970s most urban areas including Chicago had white people leaving because they were afraid of racial violence and the perception that schools in the suburbs were of higher quality. Magnet schools were given specialized programs to draw (thus magnet) people into specialized and high value programs to keep them in the city.
The Tier system was created to introduce a facially race-neutral system of admitting students. As practiced and intended, it is used to create an illegal quota system – as was recently proven in the Thomas Jefferson High School litigation in Virginia – the school board there was tired of all the coveted spots going to asian kids and created a Tier system to let in more white, black and hispanic kids.
We are under no obligation to cooperate with illegal and unethical systems. So game away.

I would try that if I were you. The grade is close, Lane has the most seats available for principal discretion, and there are LTAC students leaving, which will create opening.

The summer honors chemistry class at WY is only available to some qualified current WY Academic Center 8th grade students (selected by teachers) who elected to stay at WY.

900 tier 2. Offered at Payton. I was also offered Von Steuben Scholars. I accepted offer at Von Steuben Scholars and declined Payton because we live closer to Von. Like 10-minute drive/15 minute by bus. Our neighborhood school is a little bit further. My parents want me to try Payton because it it s a top school. I understand them that is why I put it in my selection. I only put 1 choice for SE. I am very happy that I got accepted. I just believe that we students will still excel or be successful no matter where we are placed especially if we work hard and be goal-oriented. I just chose to be more practical in terms of distance. I want to congratulate everybody for getting their offers.

You are extremely wise @Chicagostudent_2026 and I suspect you will excel, be a leader and shine at Von Steuben. Any school would be lucky to have you but your maturity in understanding that school fit goes beyond the “selectivity” of a school is going to serve you well. A good school/life balance that includes a manageable commute will lead to more enthusiasm to engage in your school and take advantage of all the opportunities presented to you. No school is perfect, but having the right attitude and outlook will get you farther than riding on reputation. Great to know that at your age!

I got into the pre-law program for Jones, and I got into WY. Both schools are great in terms of distance which won’t be an issue. I was just wondering which school I should choose based on academics, the atmosphere, support, etc.

Offer to Jones CTE and Lane. DD is unsure what to do. Lane is far for us, but we’re willing to move. Any thoughts on Jones CTE v. Lane?

Lane has been a wonderful school for our child (7th and 8th grade, entered as AC student). The teachers are caring, thoughtful, provide a nurturing environment and our child blossomed. (this is our AC experience). Our quirky child found many same minded friends, which was an extraordinary success for someone with only one friend in the previous 6 years of schooling.
The only reason we looked at other options was the commute. With children in different schools, commute was killing us. Add to that extracurriculars and kids were coming home around 8 p.m., just for a sleepover. This year was brutal and we couldn’t do it anymore.

I’d also be interested in hearing a bit more about the difference between Jones and WY. I see the “academic scores”, but am wondering about social engagement and diversity culture on the ground, stress levels (and how the school deals with them), homework, general happiness + motivation, becoming a decent and well-rounded person. Kid is not sporty, smart and motivated.

We love WY. We have friends at Jones who for the most part enjoy it. Jones does not have the diversity that WY does. Also lots of drama going on between LSC and Principal at Jones.

Jones is a true diverse school. It has a neighborhood component (CTE) to it. Our child is very happy about the school and enjoy the social life there. There are many NBCTs teaching there. We heard WY plays a lot of favoritism to their AC students and basketball team players, and also the principal is so arrogant. Jones has a lot of drama going on too. There are 3 current LSC members (you can find in the social media) holding grudges against the principal and wanting to get him fired. Jones is not perfect either but their community is very strong in my opinion. Those 3 LSC members will be replaced in the upcoming election so the school community will be stronger and better.

There’s no round two or wait lists for the SEHS, just the original offer. There’s principal discretion, but they can see your ranking so would be an extremely long shot.

I would stick with Payton if I were you. Why did you put Young at 4th in the first place? Why are you not interested in 2nd and 3rd ranked schools anymore? We were told to rank by the choice you wanted to go.

My son’s result page has been empty since Friday even after multiple reloads. His link just shows ‘undefined’. His Dashboard also does not have any info about him anymore. Obviously there is something wrong the system.
When I compare his totals to cutoff scores, he qualifies for some schools.
I am trying to call the CPS number and they are not picking up. Is there another source to find out the results please?

As for the discussion regarding tiers, I will throw in my own two cents not to change any experienced CPS parents minds ( bc those have long been forged in steel) but to offer reassurance to parents new to the CPS game, who are reading this discussion thread and wondering why someone would be willing to legally separate from his wife to get his kid into a SEHS.

Yes, for some of us that means going to extreme lengths. You see a variety of responses above to it. Some pearl clutching. Some admiration.
My own feelings are neither. I do not clutch my pearls. Bc even though I do not condone these practices since they follow the letter but not the spirit of the law, as a long time CPS parent I am long familiar with such practices, as are most other CPS parents. You have accepted the fact that no matter your personal feelings, it is what it is, and CPS will do as much or as little as it wants to do about it, and that is usually the latter.
If anything my main criticism is that the commenter has made it harder for himself than he needs to. There are easier ways to game the tier system than what he has claimed to do. I won’t list them here bc I do not support this, but it doesn’t take a genius.
In addition to the unnecessary complexity, I cannot say I admire his advice bc even though reading these threads can fill a CPS neophyte with ever increasing determination to get your kid into the “best” school, IMPO it is not always the best to give him or her the “best.”
Sometimes, actually most if not all of the time, it is better to have them earn it for themselves. Personally, I would rather watch my daughter reach up and pick the fruit off the tree herself than know I bent the branches down towards her. Gaming the system, no matter if technically within bounds, is IMO bending all the branches so far down they become distorted and you nearly break the branches off ( but not quite).
Now to be clear, I did pay for test prep and all the other creature comforts many Tier 4 kids get. My daughter was not left twisting in the wind. But she had to compete against other kids with similar privileges. Or so I like to tell myself. The system has lots of issues, and it is what is.
The system is so bad at times you feel like compromising your ideals and doing whatever it takes to get your child what everyone else seems to be clamoring for. At times I have struggled with this myself. We are human.
Do what you feel is best for your child and your family.
For some, this will mean interesting and extreme lengths. For others, this will mean encouraging and equipping to the best of your abilities and then letting go. That line between just enough and too much, ( or maybe we could say too little), differs for each family.
So young parents just starting out with CPS and coming to forums like this to glean some wisdom for the future like I used to do when my children were littles, good luck and best wishes for a bright future for your child.

I just have a quick question. I apologize for asking this last minute. My child has already accepted an offer but he noticed that in the DECISIONS page of the gocps portal, the NEXT button is gray. Was it supposed to be this way? There was <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>no</span> affirmation page or signature page for confirming that decision nor a SUBMIT button. The only button that is lighted up is the BACK button. He made the decision on his offered school 2 days after results were released.
When the BACK button is pressed to go to REVIEW your RESULTS page, it says ACCEPTED on his school of choice. So i just want to confirm if that is also what you see in your portal

I just checked. The same for us as well.
I think the website developer has written logic so that if you do not change the existing decision, then the ‘next’ button is disabled — there is no reason to submit a new decision when it is the same. If I wrote that website, I probably would have done the same — but yes, it is confusing.
School mint is pretty decent but not great. I wonder how CPS paid for its service.

There are 174 questions on the written test. How does that get scored as 450? Does a 900 score mean all 174 questions are answered correctly?
