For 1st grade, has anyone got offer from Skinner North or Skinner West? We are hoping a spot, but not sure whether it is possible for a 98/99 score, this year or historically..

Hi…I have a similar question…my kiddo is entering 1st with a 99/99 and we didn’t get an offer from Skinner North. Wondering how likely this is and would appreciate any thoughts!

      Hey!

Even I am in a similar situation 99% in Maths and Reading but have not got either Decatur or North Skinner.

Because people often do not announce that they are leaving, spots can open later in the spring or summer. But there are only as many spots open as are vacated, unless they grow the class. Skinner has 25 for K this past year which is under the cap for 1st grade – so they could grow it but they may not.

My kindergartener is at Bronzeville Classical in K and got an offer to Keller. Anyone go from a classical school to rgc or vice versa?

My son went to Poe for K, then tested into Keller for 1st grade a few years ago. Keller is a good school, and I’ve also heard good things about Bronzeville.

We were also waitlisted at Skinner 94/90 – guessing those of you with higher scores will get first offer. Tier 4

Are you for K or 1st? It is competitive to get into these two Skinners, especially for those nonentry years with limited seats. Not sure for those got in in the past, what type of scores were required.

Tiers don’t matter for non entry grades.

      This whole process is confusing!

We are applying to first grade. Here are my daughter’s scores:

      Reading – 99

      Math – 96

      RGC – 121

Bronzeville was first choice for classical and Lenart was first choice (2nd overall) for gifted. We were offered a seat in the gifted program at Beasley.

Can anyone give me any info on the gifted program at Beasley? A family member says we should hold out for the wait-list or something. How does that work? How do “tiers” factor into all of this?

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Beasley was the only gifted offer.

      Hi,

Lenart mom here, ur daughter’s scores are high enough to wait and take her chances on the wailist. Tiers don’t really matter for most 1st grade entry students. I don’t know much about Beasley but the scores were not better than our neighborhood school so we weren’t interested.

To get into bronzeville or lenart you need a student to leave. U likely wouldn’t know that until sometime this summer, because people wait until the last minute to withdraw.

Thank you for your reply. To join the waitlist, we’d have to decline Beasley, correct? This is all new to me as I’m sure it is a lot of parents.

My worry is getting on the waitlist and ending up where she is now, which is not challenging her.

        I guess it’s all a gamble, huh?

To be frank, 121 to get into lenart for nonentry year could be challenging. if it happens, could be late august or september.

I agree, 121 may not get Lenart for nonentry year. But the Classical scores for Bronzeville might? Still a gamble. What I have seen are K to 1st, 1 to 3 seats may automatically get added in round 1 because maybe there are only 25 K students and 1st Grade they will want total 28 students.
            <p style=”text-align: center;”>@MunchMama what is your Tier?

Check if Bronzeville offered any 1st Grade offers this round.

Agreed. 99/96 has a decent chance for BCS. I thought SEES K class typically has 28-29 students. It is no longer the case?

Sometimes they do not fill all the K seats at the beginning of school. The school would know

              Tier 1

How does that factor into all of this?

As it is non entry year, tier does not matter any more.

Info from CPS about tiers can be found here. They try to balance selection by tiers so there is some more equity and being Tier 1 is helpful in entry years. However, they don’t factor in after entry since there are fewer seats. There are two schools that are entry in first grade (Keller and Beaubien) though Beaubien is likely far from you given the other schools you listed.

From this spreadsheet it looks like your child’s scores would get in most places entry year, so I’m guessing that’s true for Keller. You could add to that waitlist if that looks better than Beasley and you’d likely (though again no guarantee) get an offer there. Of course declining any offer is always a risk.

That’s what I’m gathering, that it’s a risk if we don’t take our offer. If we decline and don’t get an offer on the waitlist, she’ll be attending the school she’s at now. I’m glad we have time to think about it.

      Good Morning!

I am hoping someone can help clarify this for me…

My kiddo’s classical scores were fairly high (going into 1st grade) and we now want to include a classical school that wasn’t on our initial list. When we apply to that school when round 2 opens…will her application be behind those in round 1 despite scores or does it get factored in with the rest of the applicants based on scores? Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

This is the first year doing a rolling waitlist for SES. those waitlists will be updated every night based on scores. So I guess it depends whether you can add onto the waitlist before they start offering on the 22nd. If not then it might be that first day of waitlist offers you aren’t on. I haven’t seen clear info on this and when I asked in a training the response wasn’t clear.

Thanks for responding to this…I messaged OAE about this and the clear info I did get was that on the 22nd, the waitlists will be in order of scores, regardless of when you applied and they will reorder nightly (to account for those who drop off and those who add) as you mentioned. They told me we could add on the 22nd…which I guess that means we would be out of that first day of schools we didn’t add. I am wondering if schools will offer right out the gate on 22nd or wait another day or two because it is based on scores….so many layers to this. Good luck with your kiddo and thanks for responding.

@chimama-in training, did they happen to say how they determine waitlist order for non entry years when the scores are the exact same?

It is by raw score before converting to %.
