Students who did not receive an offer to a Selective Enrollment High School that they applied to and would like to appeal with a holistic application can do so via the SEHS Principal’s Discretion process.
Application window opens: March 29th, 2023 at 10:00 am
Application window closes: April 14th, 2023 at 5:00 pm
Application results released: April 28th, 2023GoCPS Principal’s Discretion Info
2023-2024 SEHS Principal’s Discretion Handbook
Principal Discretion is a process that allows principals of the Selective Enrollment High Schools to fill a designated number of seats for ninth grade, outside of the regular selection process, and in strict compliance with the Principal Discretion guidelines. The Principal Discretion process takes place in the spring, following the first round of regular selection. Information about the process will be posted at go.cps.edu in the spring. Principal Discretion only applies to the 11 Selective Enrollment High Schools.
The application package can consist of a personal statement, letters of recommendation, and information regarding honors and awards the student has received. Students can only apply to one Selective Enrollment High School, and they must have applied to the school in the initial round.
The Principal Discretion application process opens in the spring and closes approximately 2 weeks later. The Principal Discretion Handbook, application, and FAQs will be posted on the GoCPS website. The handbook contains extensive information about the Principal Discretion process, including guidelines and step-by-step instructions.
No. Students who applied and tested for Selective Enrollment High Schools can apply for Principal Discretion whether they decline any offer or accept any offer.

Curious if anyone else is waiting for the principal discretion results?
-
WaitingpatientlyGuest
We are for WY. Pretty nervous
-
ChicagoMomGuest
Same. But I also think that regardless of the outcome, the limbo is hard on my kid who is “the only one” in her class who doesn’t know where she’s going. Once decisions come out today, it will force a decision on other good options she has, and allow her to come to some peace in this process.
-
-
jGuest
im waiting for jones.. they come out around 5 tmrw i really hope i get in
-
ChicagoMomGuest
I hope you do too. 🙂
-
-
MammaMisGuest
Where does it say that they release it after 5pm tomorrow?
-
ChicagoMomGuest
It’s a pretty good inference to make – all the other decisions were published after 5pm.
-
-
jGuest
well it doesn’t but they usually release things around that time
-
WaitingpatientlyGuest
Today is the day!
Good luck to everyone. I’m very nervous for my daughter.
-
momGuest
Good luck everyone 🙂
-
ParentGuest
Any ideas as to how many slots are potentially filled at any given school through Principal’s Discretion?
-
dad77Guest
It’s 5% of enrollment so you can look at the school’s profile on the CPS website and look at total admissions from last year to get a good idea.
-
-
LSMGuest
5% of total enrollment? Or 5% of those who applied foe PD? Does anyone know?
-
ConfusedByItAllGuest
It’s 5% of enrollment according to the information posted on several pages.
-
-
ParentGuest
Waiting on Whitney here, fingers crossed…
-
WaitingpatientlyGuest
Can I ask if anyone know the principals at the school you’re applying for PD
-
Elizabeth MGuest
We don’t know the principal. I think I read in another forum that they received results around 5pm. I haven’t received anything yet. Can any of you see the application when you go on gocps?
-
JeanineGuest
I can not see anything on the CPS site for my son that says principal discretion yet. Do we know if the results for sure come out after 5pm? I can not find that info anywhere. Hoping it’s true since we have not heard anything yet!!
-
Elizabeth MGuest
@jeanine – the info on the original post says results released today, but no time. I did tons of google searches for forums and found one that results started at about 4:45. I’m thinking maybe by 5. And I’m praying!
-
JeanineGuest
I am praying as well. Hancock hopeful here!!
-
-
Dess DessGuest
Has anyone else applied for Westinghouse through principal’s discretion? Fingers crossed, I’m very nervous hoping I get accepted.
-
Elizabeth MGuest
@dess dess – crossing my fingers for you for Westinghouse.
-
CelineGuest
I’m praying for my son, hope he can go to Lane Tech.

Hi, I got an email for the Principal Discretion process. We had applied to Payton through the PD process.
The mail indicates that my daughter has been assigned an ALTERNATE status and will be assigned a seat in numerical order, if seats are available after May 5th.
What are the chances at spot 4 in the Alternate list? Would appreciate any inputs. Thanks!
-
JeanineGuest
My sons is a #2 alternate. Does that trump the waiting list number? Or if my son was #50 on the actual waiting list does he have to wait for that first?? I’m so confused
-
Dess DessGuest
how did you find out? did they email you? Where did you find the information stating that you were placed on an alternative? I’m still not seeing any results
-
-
JeanineGuest
I called. It does not trump the actual waitlist. How often does a kid actually turn down a principal discretion offer after that extensive application? At this point I am not very hopeful 😔
-
-
Elizabeth MGuest
Check your emails. We didn’t get in: I hope some of you did
-
ParentGuest
Didn’t get in WY 🙁
-
LSMGuest
We didn’t get in.

JohnGuest
It’s a shame that CPS, which costs so much to operate, has so few seats in quality schools that many are left praying for the lottery ticket (unless you are well connected) that are PD offers. With the money spent in this district, there should be more than enough opportunity to provide a good, safe education for those who desire it.
-
ApplierGuest
I applied to Jones and got alternate number 5.
-
momGuest
what does it mean to be “alternate” and then assigned a number?
-
ApplierGuest
It’s like a mini waitlist for the school via PD. The principal can select up to 5 student that can get in if one of the selected students for PD decline. 1 is the highest 5 is the lowest. So 4 people need to decline for me to get in
-
JeanineGuest
Has anyone heard of students declining a PD offer?
-
ApplierGuest
Personally, I haven’t but that’s my experience. I think some kids may reject if they were accepted into another school the second round before PD results came out.
-
CPS ParentGuest
Do the PD offers have to be accepted or declined by 5th May. My kid is in the PD waitlist. The email says we will have a decision by May 5th but can kids accept a PD offer and subsequently not decide to join?
basically will it be a rolling waitlist ?
-
-
-
-
ApplierGuest
*5 people need to reject for me to get in sorry typo
-
sophieGuest
i applied for lane pd and didn’t get in. have been sobbing for the past hour
-
Elizabeth MGuest
Oh Sophie, I’m sure my Daughter will be sobbing tonight, but please remember how amazing you both are. You are still going to do great things even without going to Lane. Make sure you’re on the waitlist just in case. If your neighborhood high school has an honors program, get signed up for that too. But I promise you that even though you’re sad now, that not going to Lane doesn’t define you and doesn’t mean you won’t accomplish tons. Sending you hugs
-
sophieGuest
what other school is your daughter gonna go too? i’m probably going to lincoln IB
-
-
-
BenGuest
I hate this process so much. On yet another wait list (alternates) at number 5 with another May 5 deadline to see if there’s any hope. I hate this school system.
-
hahaGuest
Didn’t get into Whitney Young as well. 🙁
-
RogerGuest
Does anyone know if there will be any movement on the waitlist from today on?
-
Elizabeth MGuest
I think I read it’ll keep going for a while. We’re mid 100s so not sure we’ll move up enough though
-
RogerGuest
My child is in the single digits for Jones. I haven’t seen the waitlist number move in a few days. Sad
-

-
jGuest
i didnt get in yall, good luck to yall tho.
-
Dess DessGuest
I’m so sorry to hear that! 🙁 how did you find out? did they email you? Where did you find the information stating that you were declined or accepted?
-
BenGuest
FYI, I got an email regarding my daughter being picked as an ‘alternate’. I don’t see anything regarding it on the Go CPS portal. The email came from gocps@cps.edu.
-
jGuest
yeah they emailed my mom then i saw it myself.
-
-
-
SebastianGuest
How to check if i got in for principal discretion?
-
cpsmumGuest
Hi all- regarding principal discretion. I went thru this process with my daughter last year. The principal discretion alternate list (basically a wait list of 5 people, if its like last year) has no or very little movement for payton, jones, northside, lane and whitney. Last year a friends son was number 5 on the Lane pd waitlist and never got called. I agree that all these waitlists are crazy.

Applied for Jones….did not get in.
I have no idea what to do since I hate it at the academic center I am at.
I do not know what I did wrong. I worked so hard on my personal statement.
I planned everything on getting into Jones.
Cried a lot when I found out, probably going to cry even more later,
-
jGuest
sameeeeeeee…. i guess ill go to lindblom tho
-

Which AC are you at? What is it you don’t like about it?
-

I am at Kenwood. Most of the people here are jerks.

-
NeenersGuest
Dess Dess – I’m sorry. I know you’re disappointed, but keep your head up. Next year, get good grades, join some clubs, and apply for Westinghouse again. Maybe you can get in for your sophomore year. I knew a girl that got into Lane Tech her sophomore year. It happens. You can do it. Please know that your effort was not a waste. You are determined, and you will do well wherever you go.

MammaMiaGuest
This is for the kids who didn’t get into their school of choice from a mom whose kid didn’t get into Payton through PD…you are going to be fine. A lot of people, mostly parents, make a big deal over getting into a certain high school; but, remember, by the time you go to college, you will be among young adults who went to their neighborhood high schools and those who went to private schools their entire lives. The world is big, and you absolutely belong in it. This whole process from putting a point value on intelligence to waitlist after waitlist to principal discretion is really taxing and can make you think that if you don’t go to a SEHS that you’re doomed. But, you are not. In a year from now, all of this will be trivial and you will have a new outlook on everything. As a parent, I wish you success and that is totally possible and not exclusive to SEHS only.
-
MomGuest
Did anyone even get accepted in payton PD for real? Seems like all us were rejected. Wonder what goes behind those doors! Were they planning on accepting 15 kids and filled all those positions?
-
MammaMiaGuest
I don’t quite know what the Principal’s criteria was when selecting students. It’s a final decision, so not dwelling on the outcome or on what the process was. I think the new mayor wants to start dismantling this entire system for SEHS and bring more equity to the district’s neighborhood high schools. My kid got into a SEHS and happy about the offer. The Payton PD was a ‘let’s see what might happen’ effort.
It’s awful to hear of kids who are truly upset by this entire SEHS process…it’s not fair and I know plenty of well-off parents who use different addresses or split up for a year to live in different tiers and spend thousands on private tutors, etc.For the kids, you’re going to be fine…to the parents, chill out and support and love your kids for who they are.
-
-
RogerGuest
I see the option to file an appeal. Has anyone or do you know of anyone that submitted an appeal? I wonder what would be the outcome? Another wait list?
-
MammaMiaGuest
The PD decision is final. The appeal process is for the initial round of offers, as I understand it.
-
-
Northside momGuest
My daughter got into Payton PD. We feel very lucky.
She has lots of amazing friends who didn’t get PD into their school of choice. There are just way too many stellar students for too few seats.
-
MomGuest
Is there a reason why you would leave Northside for Payton? Just wondering how Payton is better than Northside?
-
-
pandaGuest
Good morning, will you be notified if you aren’t accepted? Or is no answer the “answer”? We haven’t received an email or show anything in our goCPS portal… I had assumed the results weren’t released yet but it seems like a lot of you already received something.
-
CpsmumGuest
Regarding the appeals process.
it is not for PD. It is for the initial round one offers for sehs. It is for someone who believes some error/mistake happened on cps end. For example- your score is higher than the cutoff score for your tier and you got no offer. So was there a computer error?
Another- you have no results showing- all your info went missing – is another that happened to some last year- but it was a tech glitch and cps fixed it.
High schools are starting to come out with summer opportunities. It was helpful for my child to overcome her disappointment once she focused on her opportunity at the school she landed – signed up for freshman connection, a camp and met other students.
-
?Guest
Does anyone have a estimate on how many kids apply to schools with PD?
*Just Curious
-
momaGuest
Last year, Jones took approx. 10% of the PD applicants. I forgot the exact numbers, but it was something like 220 applicants and 23 seats or so…. (5% of total seats).
-
-
JacobGuest
I was fortunate enough to get into northside, but has anyone gotten into Northside via PD too? Majority of people I’ve read from applied PD for Payton.
-
Jerome hickensGuest
I Was wondering if being waitlist number 2 tier 1 is a good position to be in ?
-
ColinGuest
My daughter was waitlist #5 and now was bumped to #8. What the heck is going on here? I don’t think it’s fair.
-
ASGuest
Waitlists are by points in descending order, so three kids with higher points than your daughter joined the waitlist.
-
-
-
NeenersGuest
Have any of the PD Alternates been called and offered a spot at any of the schools yet? Thanks!
-
JeanineGuest
We are PD alternate #2 here. Have not heard anything yet. They have til tomorrow to make their decisions. Still not hopefully for this alternate PD waitlist either.
-
-
studentestGuest
Hi, does anyone know when the PD alternates will receive an update if they got through? Has anyone here who was an alternate heard anything yet? Thanks and good luck to all!
-
CPS MomGuest
Was wondering the same. Will we get notified on the PD Alternate list? My daughter is 4 on the pd alternate list.
-
CpsmumGuest
Hi. Regarding alternate spots. You will be notified if a spot becomes available. And gocps will update to show offer.

I got into WY and Jones CTE and accepted wy while applying for payton pd. I didnt get into payton pd. I really want to go to payton as wy a long commute on cta. I was thinking about declining wy and going on the waitlist for payton but i dont know how much the waitlist will move anymore.. i have been debating this for weeks and i dont know what to do
does anyone know how long the waitlist is for t4 with 898 score?
-
MomOf2Guest
Something else to consider – give WY a chance, you may love it there. If not, there is an option to transfer to Payton. They accepted transfers for the first time for the 22/23 school year and have accepted 10th & 11th grade transfers for the next school year as well.
-
wyGuest
My kid has a few friends that attend WY and they love it! My kid goes to another SEHS and sometimes attends events with his WY friends and tells me the school spirit and social aspect of WY is far better than his own school. Not sure how true it is but that’s his opinion. However, I do understand the concern about the commute. Good luck!
-
-
CpsmumGuest
Hi. FYI-
No one knows how many tier 4 people are on the waitlist with your score or higher. And it can change any day with someone adding themselves to the waitlist.
Last year and this year people with tier 4 perfect scores did not get into Payton. Thus it’s likely you will not get called. Sorry. Stay with Whitney unless you have another option you like more- neighborhood school?
-
NeenersGuest
Has anybody whose child is an alternate heard from any of the schools yet? Thank you!
-
studentestGuest
Not yet for us
-

We have not heard anything nor has the website updated either

Checking again today – has anyone on the alternate list received an update yet? Thanks!
-
ApplierGuest
Nope nothing has changed
-
JeanineGuest
No calls or change on the website for us! Annoying
-
-
Emily WestGuest
Do you guys think the alternate list will update? We are currently #1 on the pd waiting list.
-
CpsmumGuest
For those on the waitlist/alternate list for academic centers and sehs. Below was posted on fb and I am sharing. This strategy of over accepting and not going to the waitlist – happens at almost all of the sehs and ac.
…since our kid is just under the cutoff for our tier to get accepted to LTAC. I emailed the director of LAC’s program, and she let me know that they don’t expect to use *any* waitlist spots–they accepted 130 students in hopes of having a 7th grade class of 116-120 kids.
-
BenGuest
What a great system!
-
-
ApplierGuest
Has anyone heard anything from being on the alternate list??
*Its been a week since the initial deadline I’m really starting to think I’m not going to hear anything back
-
studentestGuest
No new update here either – I imagine they would have had all the info to let folks know by now. Can’t tell if it’s a good or a bad thing that NO ONE has heard anything yet.
-
-
SVGuest
Is anyone else unable to see results on gocps. I was hoping to see the waitlist status change but now I’m unable to see the results. It’s locked.
-
CpsmotGuest
Hi. there are times when you can’t see the info or you can’t login due to updates on the system.
And I imagine some people have heard something but don’t participate on this forum or any online forums.
