Students who did not receive an offer to a Selective Enrollment High School that they applied to and would like to appeal with a holistic application can do so via the SEHS Principal’s Discretion process.

Application window opens: March 29th, 2023 at 10:00 am
Application window closes: April 14th, 2023 at 5:00 pm
Application results released: April 28th, 2023

      GoCPS Principal’s Discretion Info

      2023-2024 SEHS Principal’s Discretion Handbook

Principal Discretion is a process that allows principals of the Selective Enrollment High Schools to fill a designated number of seats for ninth grade, outside of the regular selection process, and in strict compliance with the Principal Discretion guidelines. The Principal Discretion process takes place in the spring, following the first round of regular selection. Information about the process will be posted at go.cps.edu in the spring. Principal Discretion only applies to the 11 Selective Enrollment High Schools.

The application package can consist of a personal statement, letters of recommendation, and information regarding honors and awards the student has received. Students can only apply to one Selective Enrollment High School, and they must have applied to the school in the initial round.

The Principal Discretion application process opens in the spring and closes approximately 2 weeks later. The Principal Discretion Handbook, application, and FAQs will be posted on the GoCPS website. The handbook contains extensive information about the Principal Discretion process, including guidelines and step-by-step instructions.

No. Students who applied and tested for Selective Enrollment High Schools can apply for Principal Discretion whether they decline any offer or accept any offer.

Same. But I also think that regardless of the outcome, the limbo is hard on my kid who is “the only one” in her class who doesn’t know where she’s going.  Once decisions come out today, it will force a decision on other good options she has, and allow her to come to some peace in this process.

It’s 5% of enrollment so you can look at the school’s profile on the CPS website and look at total admissions from last year to get a good idea.

Hi, I got an email for the Principal Discretion process. We had applied to Payton through the PD process.

The mail indicates that my daughter has been assigned an ALTERNATE status and will be assigned a seat in numerical order, if seats are available after May 5th.

What are the chances at spot 4 in the Alternate list? Would appreciate any inputs. Thanks!

It’s a shame that CPS, which costs so much to operate, has so few seats in quality schools that many are left praying for the lottery ticket (unless you are well connected) that are PD offers. With the money spent in this district, there should be more than enough opportunity to provide a good, safe education for those who desire it.

It’s like a mini waitlist for the school via PD. The principal can select up to 5 student that can get in if one of the selected students for PD decline. 1 is the highest 5 is the lowest. So 4 people need to decline for me to get in

Do the PD offers have to be accepted or declined by 5th May. My kid is in the PD waitlist. The email says we will have a decision by May 5th but can kids accept a PD offer and subsequently not decide to join?

Make sure you’re on the waitlist just in case. If your neighborhood high school has an honors program, get signed up for that too. Hi all- regarding principal discretion. I went thru this process with my daughter last year.  The principal discretion alternate list (basically a wait list of 5 people, if its like last year) has no or very little movement for payton, jones, northside, lane and whitney.   Last year a friends son was number 5 on the Lane pd waitlist and never got called.  I agree that all these waitlists are crazy.

This is for the kids who didn’t get into their school of choice from a mom whose kid didn’t get into Payton through PD…you are going to be fine. A lot of people, mostly parents, make a big deal over getting into a certain high school; but, remember, by the time you go to college, you will be among young adults who went to their neighborhood high schools and those who went to private schools their entire lives. The world is big, and you absolutely belong in it. This whole process from putting a point value on intelligence to waitlist after waitlist to principal discretion is really taxing and can make you think that if you don’t go to a SEHS that you’re doomed. But, you are not. In a year from now, all of this will be trivial and you will have a new outlook on everything. As a parent, I wish you success and that is totally possible and not exclusive to SEHS only.

I don’t quite know what the Principal’s criteria was when selecting students. It’s a final decision, so not dwelling on the outcome or on what the process was. I think the new mayor wants to start dismantling this entire system for SEHS and bring more equity to the district’s neighborhood high schools. My kid got into a SEHS and happy about the offer. The Payton PD was a ‘let’s see what might happen’ effort.
It’s awful to hear of kids who are truly upset by this entire SEHS process…it’s not fair and I know plenty of well-off parents who use different addresses or split up for a year to live in different tiers and spend thousands on private tutors, etc.

For the kids, you’re going to be fine…to the parents, chill out and support and love your kids for who they are.

      Regarding the appeals process.

it is not for PD. It is for the initial round one offers for sehs. It is for someone who believes some error/mistake  happened on cps end. For example- your score is higher than the cutoff score for your tier and you got no offer. So was there a computer error?

Another- you have  no results showing- all your info went missing – is another that happened to some  last year- but it was a tech glitch and cps fixed it.

High schools are starting to come out with summer opportunities. It was helpful for my child to overcome her disappointment once she focused on her opportunity at the school she landed –  signed up for freshman connection, a camp and met other students.

Something else to consider – give WY a chance, you may love it there.  If not, there is an option to transfer to Payton.  They accepted transfers for the first time for the 22/23 school year and have accepted 10th & 11th grade transfers for the next school year as well.

No one knows how many tier 4 people are on the waitlist with your score or higher. And it can change any day with someone adding themselves to the waitlist.

Last year and this year people with tier 4 perfect scores did not get into Payton.  Thus it’s  likely you will not  get called. Sorry. Stay with Whitney unless you have another option you like more- neighborhood school?

For those on the waitlist/alternate list for academic centers and sehs. Below was posted on fb and I am sharing. This strategy of over accepting and not going to the waitlist – happens at almost all of the sehs and ac.

…since our kid is just under the cutoff for our tier to get accepted to LTAC. I emailed the director of LAC’s program, and she let me know that they don’t expect to use *any* waitlist spots–they accepted 130 students in hopes of having a 7th grade class of 116-120 kids.

Is anyone else unable to see results on gocps. I was hoping to see the waitlist status change but now I’m unable to see the results. It’s locked.

Hi. there are times when you can’t see the info or you can’t login due to updates on the system.

And I imagine some people have heard something but don’t participate on this forum or any online forums.
