Hi
My girl got an offer for Mc Dade . It was 2nd on our list.,Any Mc Dade parents here? Would appreciate any thoughts or feedback on the school please. Wondering if we should accept it or wait for Bronzeville (3rd option) or skinner north.
Reading:99
Math:99
RGC:125
I am confused as I read a lot on bronzeville here and didn’t see much posts on Mc Dade

Most of the commentators are from the north side so you won’t see much. I’m debating between Carnegie disney and vanderpool

Thanks that helps. We stay in bucktown and will have to relocate… So really hoping to hear something regarding this school before we accept.
Good luck Betty.

I’ve driven by and it’s tucked in right off 87th. Where are you moving? The principal is really nice. My son didn’t get in (we didn’t do test prep lol) but it was my first choice because we could have walked there. She’s pretty nice I think she will schedule something with you.

Hi Betty .. thanks.. we are thinking to move either to bronzeville or hyde park… within the school bus boundaries.
-
BettyGuest
Did you apply to Carnegie? We’re leaning in that direction and it’s in Hyde park.
-
NeehaGuest
No we didn’t apply to Canergie.Any particular streets in hyde park you suggest to look for a condo?

My son went to Mcdade 2 yrs ago now at Lindblom AC. McDade now goes up to the 8th grade and Ms Gray the principle is FANTASTIC the PTA is great as well we had a great experience. The academics are great and they just build new gym, science lab , and additional class room. I would high recommend McDade small science but excellent environment and open for ideals for improvement.

Look in Woodlawn as far as price goes or south shore. The market over there is tough and over priced.

NeehaGuest
Hi Jazzman…. Thank you …. Are you saying their science program is small?.. I didn’t understand what you meant by – small science
-
NeehaGuest
Thanks Betty ..we are checking..very competitive pricing.

Hi, our youngest child goes to McDade for K. We will ask if some of the other parents can comment on this post as they have more experience with the school than we do. Some of her classmates have older siblings who also attend McDade and their parent perspectives will likely be much more informative, especially since this year has mostly been remote and even now, there is limited interaction among classrooms due to the pandemic. With those caveats, we have been very pleased with how much our daughter has learned this year. The major advantage has been small class size (15 this year – not sure if this is the norm or due to pandemic). The school is small – one class per grade. There has been a lot of homework which I normally am not a fan of but in our case, was instrumental in helping her catch up and thrive. The teacher leads small groups, which allows differentiated learning. The principal seems to actively seek enrichment opportunities – there was a six session free once-weekly after-school virtual program this spring, which included options such as art, cooking, piano, dance, which was pretty cool. I think the theater program is new, but a stroke of genius for remote learning as the teacher is an actor who knows how to engage the kids even through video. I don’t believe there is art or music aside from this. The language is Spanish. We don’t live anywhere near the school – we did not consider relocating ourselves, but one of us works on the south side and our neighborhood school was not a great option so we took a chance and it has worked out well for us.

Thank you cpsparent3 . Before the pandemic started did you send your kid in school bus? .. yes plz thank you v much .. will help to hear from others too., We hadn’t realized how far mc dade was when we selected it and don’t know anyone studying there ., My husband works in downtown and the school starts early.relocating seems to be the best option for us to make it work as it is over an hour’s drive from our current home .

We don’t qualify for the school bus – too far. We live in Logan Square and if leaving early (by 7 am at latest), it has been taking about 40-45 minutes. Any later and traffic is worse and it takes longer. Also, accidents or construction increases the time to up to an hour. It is worth it for us since it’s in the direction of work but you have a much more difficult decision to make. Good luck!

Great that you. We are in bucktown ., Right next to you 🙂 . If you were able to manage driving so far …it gives me confidence. My husband works in the loop.

How much time would the return trip take you on an average and can you share any details about what is done in the after school program please.
Can the kids eat a snack in after school program?

My granddaughter is a current Kindergarten student at McDade Classical and we love the school. An amazing engaging Principle and we loved her Kindergarten Teacher. The work is very challenging but my granddaughter has maintain honor status. My daughter was going to retest her in 2020 for Keller but decide to stay at McDade because she loved it that much. Has small classes, current goes to 7 grade but will be adding 8 grade. Renovation was completed in 2020 with an added Annex. Classes offered Reading, Math, Writing, Social Science, KG Health, Science, Drama, Spanish, PE, KG Library. hope this helps. Also she has a cousin that is in the 3rd grade that has been there since Kindergarten who’s Mother is a Principle at another school who also recommend it.

Hi Nettenut .. thanks much.
We visited the school yesterday for the tour and met the principal., She took us around the building. I liked what I saw., I wonder if the school teaches a musical instrument that was one thing I missed asking.
It is a big decision to uproot and move houses !

Yes they teach musical instruments my son started on the violin and still plays. Ms. Gray is fantastic she is very open on working with parents and receptive to good ideas to make things better for the school.
-
NeehaGuest
Do you remember which grade they start the musical instrument at? And if you don’t mind me asking …. Would you go with Mc Dade or give up Mc Dade’s seat and hope for bronzeville in the next round?

jazzmanGuest
I don’t remember when they start want to say 1-2 grade. McDade was wonderful for our family boys tend to do well. Bronzeville is a wonderful school if there is room what is your location related to your school choices?? You have a great tough decision I would take McDade and try it. If you don’t like it you can transfer the next year.
Ms. Gray the principle is fantastic and open for improvements.

We are in bucktown which is in the north side… We will have to relocate either for mc dade or bronzeville classical… Skinner N is daily commutable time wise.
-
jazzmanGuest
getting to bronzeville would be a shorter commute than McDade or Poe. Bronzeville is right off the dan ryan at 43rd exit. Great housing options in Bronzeville , Kenwood, Oakland area. If she was excepted at SN and you don’t want to leave Bucktown than its a clear choice.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to respond back to me . It helped me through a very confusing time. We eventually declined our seat in Mc Dade (with a house filled with moving boxes!) ., we got an offer from Skinner North in 2nd round and gladly took it -we dont have to move -atleast this year 🙂 .
For any future parents interested in Mc Dade – we toured the school, were happy with the facility , the teachers etc. My daughter even attended a welcome drive through party the school held in July., it was fun and we got to interact with the teachers. Their kindergarten teacher is awesome and the principal plans to bring in a teacher for algebra next year. Wishing the best!

glad you found option to stay in your current location but Mcdade would have been happy to have You as a parent and your child as a dolphin. Ms Gray is a wonderful principle and pushing McDade for further excellence.
