After reading recent posts on this site that were pretty similar to my situation I started thinking more of it. I scored lower than the required points for these schools—about 40 points off. My friends keep saying I’ll still get in, but I can’t stop worrying about my spot on the waitlists. I really wanna believe I have a chance, but it also feels like I’m just holding onto false hope. Realistically, what waitlist number would someone need to actually have a good shot at getting into schools like Northside, Jones, or Lane Tech this late in the year? Like, would being number 5 to 9—or even lower—make it likely?

Sorry, but these schools do not make offers off the waitlists. Even if you are #1 on the WL, there is no chance.

I think this might have changed in the last two years, but there’s so little online discussion these days that it’s hard to say. Someone from our school got a waitlist spot at Jones recently. I think 40 points from the cutoff is probably a long shot but hopefully people will update here so there’s up to date info if wait lists start moving.

Jones is not only an SEHS school, it has a neighborhood magnet cluster component. Could be that they got that or possibly Principal Discretion offer into SEHS?
You can do a FOIA request, but the top 5 SEHS do not make offers from waitlists.

You’re right, turns out it was a CTE waitlist spot (outside of the neighborhood, didn’t realize that ever happened).

Thanks so much for all of your responses, though I am confused about what is meant by schools like Jones and Northside don’t make offers off the waitlist. My classmate was also on the waitlist for Jones and was offered a spot at the school. However this was earlier just when the HSAT results came out. Could it be that students are only offered a spot off the waitlist early on?

I think before two years ago, while there was technically a wait list it wasn’t actively used, and in the last few years it’s changed and now there’s some wait list movement but it’s hard to know the details because discussion fell off a cliff. I do think Lane specifically does not move.

I think we likely saw the most waitlist movement after people made their initial decision of which school to attend, which would be right after the acceptance deadline. It sounds like this may be when your friend got an offer.

By now, many (or all?) SEHS have done some kind of enrollment activity: parents submitting required paperwork, course selection, etc. So waitlist movement will probably be slower if it happens at all, and will depend on students who change their mind at the last minute, move away, don’t meet Chicago residency requirements, or for some reason don’t complete the required paperwork to enroll.
