CPS apparently canceled all kindergarten-entrance SEES tests that had been scheduled in October. Said it was because of a “schedule conflict” with IIT, but when I called IIT, they said they had no idea CPS had canceled anything, so the conflict was not on their end. I have not been able to get an answer from OAE/CPS as to what happened. They said they’re adding dates, but as of yet there are a few days they added at the end of December (before holiday break).
Does anyone have any additional information? Did anyone have a kindergarten test in October that wasn’t canceled? Pretty frustrating for all those parents who had reasons to have their kids test earlier in the process.

Just because whoever answered the phone at IIT didn’t know about tests being canceled doesn’t mean this had nothing to do with IIT. It just means that whoever answers phones at IIT isn’t privy to that information.

Possible. Except that I spoke with the facilities manager who would know about what rooms are reserved for the test. She knew CPS uses the space for the test, but had not been told that the tests had been canceled.
-
cps-thoughtsGuest
It’s not just IIT facilities that CPS reserves. They also need psychologists/proctors to actually provide testing services. Those personnel aren’t supplied by CPS, or at least that’s my understanding.
-
CPSsGuest
If that is the case, I really hope between CPS and IIT they handle it well so the individual psychologists/proctors won’t be by any chance unhappy or something which might potential affect how the tests go…

And now they are canceling November. CPS said it was because of a scheduling conflict with IIT, not lack of proctors. So while there may have been outside factors affecting CPS’s decision to cancel all those dates (which now include November), the reason they [involuntarily] gave does not align, and more importantly, they are not helping parents who had reasons for reserving earlier times. Had parents known all October/November dates weren’t available, they would have chosen the first available dates, not the last possible. This sounds like poor planning that is resulting in weeks of families having to scramble, with no explanation, communication, or assistance. Families who won’t be in town this late into the testing period (or visa issues, as noted below) certainly have a hill to climb now.

Not a kindergarten test, but 3td grade and also the October date got cancelled.
It is possible OAE decided not to administer any tests in October.
-

Yep. A friend had an Oct test canceled for a current 1st grader. Because of some visa issues, they literally won’t get another chance this year. Really not ok on CPS.
-
cps-thoughtsGuest
Have they reached out to try to reschedule? Even if there aren’t dates later than December available right now, there will probably be more sessions added in the future. Or are they literally unable to be in Chicago any time between now and the end of February?
-
KatGuest
Yep–they have to leave the country for visa renewal so CPS just screwed them over.
-
cps-thoughtsGuest
Seems like it’s more accurate to say that the visa renewal process screwed them over.

No, it’s fair to say CPS is in the wrong here. People have planned their lives around this test. Parents did as they were told to do. They chose a date. CPS is now changing those plans and not offering assistance.
-

People have planned their lives around a test they can’t have scheduled any more than 5 weeks (and 2 days) ago?

You’re clearly not empathetic to the families affected, nor do you have any useful information to offer, so maybe this conversation isn’t for you.
-
cps-thoughtsGuest
What would be useful information? I can’t provide an explicit reason about why the tests have been canceled, but I can do better than make unfounded assertions about why they were canceled. The first step people should take if they’re having problems rescheduling is reach out to OAE. If they can’t help, THEN complain.
You don’t get to declare what level of empathy I feel. It is absolutely ludicrous, however, to act as though a test being (non-permanently!) canceled is “screwing over” a PRIMARY-GRADE CHILD. This test isn’t the difference between Harvard and abject academic failure for anyone’s child. I guess it’s fair to say that I don’t have any empathy for entitled attitudes.

Now a 5th grade test on November 6 got moved to late December yesterday. Has anyone even had their test or is everyone being moved and the testing has not started for anybody?
-

According to OAE, everyone has been canceled for October, and as reported below, it sounds like they’re canceling for November as well.

Our kindergarten test for next week (Nov. 4) was canceled yesterday. Two people I spoke with at CPS told me all November dates are canceled. I don’t know if that’s accurate or not because November dates are still available in the system, but there are no December dates available. There are two January dates — both of which we will be out of town for. I’m going to try to contact CPS again on Monday. We’ll be gone for all of January so I really hope they get some December dates on the schedule.

Dates that they cancel show up as available, but if you try to book it, the system will give you a message saying you can’t book that date. We are running into the same issue… supposed to be out of the country for when we got rescheduled. Have emailed and called, and have not been offered any assistance. I know in past years they’ve offered tests in February (for example, for the children that have to take the early entrance to kindergarten test first), so maybe they’ll extend this year as well. So many families have been canceled so far, I think they’ll have to extend.

Thanks so much for letting me know. I just spoke with someone in the CPS Office who confirmed there won’t be any November test dates, even though it shows up in the system. As you say above, if you click on the date to schedule a test, it tells you it’s not available. All of the December slots have been filled. She believes they will slowly be adding January dates, other than the two dates currently available. Like you, I hope they push into February because that’s the only way my daughter will get an opportunity to take the test. I would imagine they would need to do this given that all November (and I believe all October?) dates were canceled.

Wow your response is wild. I agree some of your points like this is probably not the most important thing in most of families’ lives compared to many other stuff. But still. Many families scheduled their testing date more than 5 weeks prior to their original testing date and just got canceled without giving any reasons and some of them try to support each other or vent here and we heard you were saying all the above. I don’t know if you are a parent with a kid who tested previously, will test this year or in the future. But good luck!

Trolls will be trolls. I hope other families affected by this are able to connect and feel supported.

Hi, I just want to say I’m sorry about previous comments — in retrospect, they were unnecessarily harsh. (Though I maintain that the “CPS SCREWED OVER a family because their October test date was canceled!!” thing was an extremely bad, wrong, and entitled take, and I can’t and won’t respect it. All other venting is totally valid.) I have a child in K at a SEES and a toddler, so I’ve been there, and I will be there again. Now that I’ve done this once, I know that I let myself get way too invested in this process, even though I would have HAPPILY enrolled my child in a non-SEES school if she hadn’t qualified.
Don’t let yourselves be like that — it sucks! A test being rescheduled isn’t the end of the world! Your child will be fine even if you don’t get the schools that you now desperately want! Please let yourselves relax, remember that there are MONTHS left to test, and if you email gocps@cps.edu (and follow up if you haven’t gotten things sorted), they will make sure your child can test. That said, be very vigilant if February comes around and you still need to test. If you’re here, you’re clearly the type of parent who is capable of advocating for your child. This means you, and your child, will be fine.

Thank you for sharing that! I appreciate your perspective and I agree what you said above. I think for those parents who go through this and deal with CPS first time in their life, those cancellations were too unexpected and felt unfair. At this point, I feel many , if not most, families have accepted what it is. In retrospect, maybe it is a good thing to make families lower their expectation on CPS.

Are they saying there will no tests at all in November? We still have our exam scheduled for November and I have not received any notification of cancelation… Hope it stays this way.

Some parents are getting a call and no email. Some parents are getting an email and no call. Some parents are getting nothing. Call OAE and confirm. They can look you up by last name.

I called OAE today and they assured me that if you have not received a call or email about test cancelation, your test will take place when scheduled. Not all November test dates have been canceled. She also told me they do not anticipate canceling additional dates as of now.

Just wanted to let everyone know about what happened to us last year, in case it is helpful:
We had our daughter scheduled for end of January for testing and two days before they left a voicemail that appointment has been cancelled (My guess was that it was due to the covid surge at the time). In the voicemail they indicated that they will reach out to schedule a new date. Fast forward few weeks later and I realize that we were not contacted again. When I called the admissions office at CPS they told me that testing was already closed (!!!) but after hanging on the line for quite some time they were able to get my daughter rescheduled for a March appointment (yes, after the testing was supposedly done for the year). It was certainly stressful and my point is to keep contacting the office (noting the headache it may cause).
