      Hi everyone.

We are part of the skinner west neighborhood program. For those of you that also had kids at SW and ended up at Whitney young, did you think SW prepares their students? Anyone here that got into the academic center at WY during 7th grade? If so, what prep did you do for your child? And what did you do throughout elementary school that helps in the long run?

      Thanks!

I have a child that just got into WY from SW Classical – their score was above that high T4 cutoff which neighborhood kids also have to get. No teacher or class can prep your kid for this AC test, as the test isn’t really about knowledge – and even though my child is a good student, I did not know how they would do. In recent years, CPS has used the RGC style test for academic center. It is very different from the classical test. It is centered on “logic” and problem solving has puzzles – much like an IQ test – it is ‘tricky’ but not necessarily requiring a student to work above Grade level. Some kids can be great students, but just don’t do well on that test. Others just do. One strategy is to have your kid sit for the RGC test before the actual one in 6th grade by applying to a CPS RGC in 4th or 5th, or by taking a practice test through a test prep center, or a website [NNAT, OLSAT – these types of tests have logic questions]. This may help the kid be less nervous and have familiarity with the type of questions they’ll be asked – and to focus during the test. The HSAT test [taken in 8th] is very different from the RGC test, and they may do better on it. Unfortunately it’s is somewhat of a ‘crapshoot’ – have to be flexible and plan for either outcome. Also, straight A’s in 5th grade final is a must to get into WY or Lane at T4 unde the current points system.
