GuestMy child is currently a good student at a top selective enrollment elementary school. He is active in extracurricular activities in and out of school. He seems to do well in all areas with general ease but isn’t necessarily begging for more work or challenge. He was accepted to WY AC and he’s undecided about whether he wants to go. The commute for us will be less convenient but not inconvenient.
Can anyone with experience making this similar decision break down their thought process? Some specific questions include: are AC students basically stuck in their cohort the rest of high school? If they transfer to another HS will they take classes with upper grade level? How do AC courses align with classical program courses which are supposed to be a grade level ahead of general CPS? What are the main advantages of AC for someone like my son?

Guestcongrats having that option to go to WY AC. The AC will challenge them academical not doubt. Their executive function skills will be put to test organization and the ability to prioritize assignments that are due. They will also encounter other very smart and motivated children so buckle up. You will run into certain teachers who feel like they dont have to teach into detail because they are “smart” kids so they will or should just understand. So even at the “good” schools you still have to monitor and advocate for your child(ren).
Now to the benefits of attending AC make friends especially for high School since most of students they meet in AC will stay at WY for high school. The other benefit is that once your in you dont have to retest your already accepted in the high school. The biggest factor for AC you earn high school credits in middle school. This will allow you to graduate earlier or take more AP or dual credit classes and get college credits ( depends on the university) this saves you money for college boost the GPA for scholarships.

GuestThank you for sharing your thoughts. My son tests well so the guaranteed acceptance for high school is less concerning for him, but it will be fore his siblings if we want to keep them at the same school. The college credit could be enticing but I enjoyed my 100 series classes. Does the college credit in high school help with college admissions?

GuestYes when the college admissions teams see the extra rigor with AP and dual enrollment classes it will definitely give them a extra boost.
