If your kids get into the WY AC accelerated math program, they’re in for a tough ride! I mean, they’re gonna have to put in a ton of work if they want to get an A. If they don’t, they might end up with a B or C, which could be a bummer if they’re in tier 4 and want to transfer to another high school next year.

so the math test questions in the WY AC program are crazy hard, like at the AMC 10 or 12 level. But honestly, don’t expect too much from the math teachers, they’re not always the best at helping you out. It feels like they just make the questions hard on purpose to keep you at WY.

Anyway, if you don’t want to deal with all that, the trick is to not do too well on the math placement test so you don’t end up in the accelerated program. Easy peasy!

If the kids get into the accelerated math program in 8th grade, they have to do well in 7th Grade and Algebra Exit Exam.

As I know, if the kids did not do well in 7th Grade, the teacher will put them back to the ‘normal’ (Honor) class.  But in the first place, how can you talk to your kids, you shouldn’t do ‘too well’ in the placement test (at the time they got into AC) and when they take the Algebra Exit Exam (at the end of 7th grade) in order to not place in the accelerated math program in 8th grade??

What does the WYAC accelerated math program teach in 7th and 8th grades, respectively?  Is it hard to get straight A’s in the 7th grade?  With one B, the kid may be stuck at WY high school since the scores won’t make it possible to attend other selective high schools

About a quarter (30-40)  of the AC students (~120) at Whitney Young High School achieve straight As each year, and half of that quarter comes from the accelerated math program. Presumably, all the kids at the accelerated math program should get As’ if they were not in the accelerated math program. Instead, they  are getting a “B” or lower and get stuck at WY if they are in tier 4 or 3.  Note only ~16% of the kids who are not in the accelerated math program got straight As. Now we can get a sense of how tough the WY AC program is.

How many students at WYAC leave WY and switch to other high school like Payton?

Does WY AC accelerated math program teach Honors Algebra 1 in grade 7th and Geometry in grade 8th, or even more advanced math than that?

The truly accelerated math students will take geometry in grade 7. The rest of the students are split up into three different Algebra tracks.

WY does not offer linear algebra, differential equations, analysis etc, so your student would either take statistics and probability of higher level math classes outside of WY after calculus.

Anyone have experience moving your child out of the academic center after 7th grade? To another AC, neighborhood CPS, selective enrollment CPS or suburban school? Wondering about the transition, especially for something like math. Even with single subject grade acceleration at CPS, it works better in younger grades. Not sure what it would look like in CPS 8th grade.

My child is a good student. Has good grades. The pros and cons people described about the WY AC are all more or less on target. My son describes a mostly miserable group of AC classmates that dislike the work load and struggle academically to some degree. They definitely don’t talk about this in the open houses.
