Participantshould have bought a condo near Skinner North. It is tier 2 except that the condos are too expensive.

ParticipantAgreed. LTAC director actually said that LTAC students shouldn’t even accept admission to Lane high school because it will take away a spot from others. It seems counter intuitive to rank Lane as first choice as a LTAC student.

ParticipantThey use Math and 3 sections of English as tie breakers.
Getting 99% on all 4 scores will lead to Payton admission though the school is overrated in my opinion — especially considering how disorganized the new principal is.

ParticipantWhere did you hear that they will change the 30% ranked admission next year?

ParticipantGot a few questions wrong doesn’t mean the score will be disappointing. The grade is relative to the students who took the test.

ParticipantMy son tested last year and based on what he said, there were couple of harder questions towards the end that are based on what he learned in school but not in the testprep. Frankly, I don’t have much confidence in selective prep’s coverage since they don’t update materials at all. I know that since my daughter is in the AC class and the materials are identical to that of three years ago. Still, I think it’s the best approach to prepare for the test. Test prep helps children to get used to the pace and format of the test, just not necessarily in coverage.
In any case, if your child finds it hard, others will do so too. So, there is comfort in that. Also, you don’t have to be perfect to score a perfect score.

ParticipantThanks. I do see more dates after paying more attention to the calendar choices.

ParticipantWhy do I see this:
Regional Gifted Exam – Grade 7
Your selected schools/programs do not require any events.
My child is applying for the academic center. Is this academic center entrance exam? I am confused. The only date is Jan 14th.

ParticipantHere is the map I was talking about.
Within the tier 2 box, the cheapest house is close to 500K. The rest are close to a million or way over it.

ParticipantHere is a gem:
https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1326-N-Cleveland-Ave-Chicago-IL-60610/80835440_zpid/
Tier 2 housing for a cool 2.1 million and change.

ParticipantI just saw it. This makes me so angry that a luxury condo building full of million dollar units is listed as Tier 3.
The vast expanse of the areas included luxury buildings are considered Tier 2 and Tier 3.
You are right. One has to be really rich to be considered poor in Chicago.

ParticipantWell, your situation is exactly what is wrong with system. No one is blaming you for living in Tier 2 and take advantage of the system. If I had the foresight to live in a place I like in Tier 2 I would do so as well. Like others said, it goes against the spirit of the system, which is supposed to make the selection process more equitable but somehow makes it less equitable. Tier 2 has quite a big advantage. It is just not fair to the students who work extremely hard but still can’t achieve their goals because of where they live.

ParticipantThe ship has sailed. Experian, the company knows more about you than yourself, was hacked a few years ago. Everyone’s financial information can be bought in the dark web nowadays.

ParticipantEach CPS applicant is given a form to declare their family income. This can be made mandatory to determine their Tier status. This is easily verifiable through the state tax system. It is certainly not perfect but far more reliable than address. The reason I suspect that this was not adopted is not due to cost or complexity. I think this will close the giant loophole many wealthy families are taking advantage of.

ParticipantYou don’t need to be in SEHS to excel. Many parents choose SEHS for safety reasons. Spreading resources to each school evenly is probably the better approach but I doubt that is the only reason that some SEHS are more competitive than the others.
The reality is that if the current Tier system is changed for the worse, then more families would be forced to use a secondary address in lower Tiers to give their children an edge. I don’t see any enforcement action ever from CPS on Tier system abuses.
